Exhaust Rings

Hi all hope you all had a happy Xmas and look forward to a safe new year

Can anyone help me with my little problem (ho Betty)
One of my exhaust stubs on my R100GS has been repaired in the past before I got the bike and has never been a great fit I’ve had the bike about 5 years now so it wait’s until I’m in Morocco to start blowing and to cut a long story short I did the road side bodge up and that has held until now but in the process I have made the threads worse and even with a new ring its not a very good fit
So where is the best place to get the thread re-cut?

Thanks for your help Bob

Have you thought of springs to hold the exhaust in place, could be a cheaper option. and makes life a dodal to strip the exhaust off when you need too.

I sent a pair of heads to Motobins who fitted threaded bronze sleeves.

These are pegged to prevent them twisting off if the exhauts nuts become siezed.

I use copperslip grease on assembly and that seems to work.

Pity I did this to the bike I have just sold, rather than to the one I am keeping :blast

It wasn't cheap but I thought it worthwhile (I can't remember the exact cost and I have given the new owner all the old invoices, I think it was around £80 for the pair but please check with Motobins if you are interested).

Thanks for the help chaps I’m going to look into the clamps because

1 you don’t have to strip the head off the bike

2 the head has been repaired in the past and people seem to think this could be a problem

3 ’m a lazy git (see point 1)

Anyone used this product, it looks well made etc and could be interesting ????

Bob . . you done any more looking into the above at all ???

This is (or was) a very common problem. In order to do the 'proper' fix the heads have to come off and be sent to a good quality engineering workshop. The heads are very easy to remove - no ohc drive to worry about and no problem with head gaskets as on the later oilheads.

The product shown that clamps onto the exisitng (good or damged) thread is a very interesting solution. One thought though - the exhaust nuts are the shape they are for a very important reason.........they are heatsinks and with the later airheads running ever leaner they run hotter and the heat dissapation properties of the exhaust nut are more paramount than ever.

My advice would be to get the threads repaired and yearly spin them off and apply a bit of anti sieze such as a copper based product.

I have decided to get the head off and have a proper job done because we all know if you don’t do it right it will come back and bite you on the bum at the most inconvenient time
Its £50 per head I will let you know how I get on

Thanks for the Help folks :beerjug:
