exploding rear wheel bearings

Hello all,

A couple of years back I parted with my immaculate 1150GS, which I dearly loved, other than the rear wheel bearing that failed twice in 20,000miles. I do a lot of miles and decided I wanted to get rid.

And now...the BM bug returns. I miss the handling, brakes, rock solidness etc.

I'm after an 1150RS (fugly I know!) and wondered if they have a rep for doing in wheel bearings like the GS, as it's pretty much the same rear end. Anyone have any wisdom on this? Failing that I'll take some half baked internet advice

First with the half-baked internet advice.....
First of all,they use the same final drive so it can fail.
When you had your 1150GS final drive fixed,who did the work and was it shimmed correctly?.
Did you use it a lot offroad and how often was the bevel oil changed.
I changed my bearing at 54K and it was still good.
I also check and change the oil every 6K miles.

You don't hear of many RS's having bearing problems.

But that's because there are only a handful on the road.

Sounds to me like you had a bad one, not heard of many going as often as that. My mate has had a couple on his K12RS, but we wonder if thats the power and weight getting too much for them, although the K isn't exactly the heaviest use of the design, its probably the biggest combination of both weight and power.
If you would consider an 1150rs why not look at the 1200st in the for sales. Good price for a great bike if you can live with the styling. And they run the new final drive which looks to me like it was designed specifically to handle much higher outputs.

Evening,
Just had the bearing on my 1150 RT replaced for the fourth time in 16 months (26,000 miles). CW's say everything looks fine except they cleaned out a blocked oil channel. Not sure which channel they're talking about and I'm not sure if it's the cause of the problem. I'll just have to wait and see.

Oh, and for comparison, my 1150 GS has done 76k on it's original wheel bearing.

It seems there are good ones and bad ones out there and I have one of each.

Of course, this doesn't help out guzzimag in anyway.
