Insurance renewal £158........IAM membership, 9 years potected no claims, locked in a garage etc, etc:thumb

Extended Warranty £360............. £0 excess!:blast

I must be mad but just couldn't help the 'paranoia' incase I had a brake down in the middle of nowhere on a wild and wet winters night two hundred miles from home!:blast

Anyone else 'caved in' and paid out for a warranty and breakdown cover they've never ever needed in the past even though they ride the 'most unreliable' BMW ever made?:augie

In all the years riding an 1150GSA then an HP2E i've never needed so much as a crush washer from BMW and as for breakdowns i've never had one that I couldn't just fix myself on the roadside.

Go on and tell me the best and worst experience you've had?

I've had an Motorrad Extended Warranty on my bike for 4 years and never had to make a claim so in theory I'm out of pocket. However when I add the cost of the policy's inclusive european cover (£130) and the fact that the Motorrad backed fully comp insurance only costs me £135 per anum I reckon I've broken even and the bike still has a nice transferable warranty :D

I've never made a claim and yet I'm still happy :comfort

I have the optional AA Breakdown Insurance - covers 2 cars and the bike as an optional extra to the breakdown cover, costs me £80 a year and covers me up to £500 (excess is £25). Halfshafts went on the 90 few months ago and that cost me £560 so I paid just £85 and the 1150 brakes required some work - that just cost me for £25

I've a 2008GSA and the only thing which went wrong under the extended warranty was they ignition barrel. The key became stuck inside it. A worn barrel was diagnosed and replaced. Wasn't covered by warranty either!

I have the extended warranty and was on the verge of ditching it but the rear wheel bearings went so I am keeping it. Over the 18 mths I have had it I think I am ahead of them in terms of what they have paid out vs what I have paid in. The bike is a 07 GS with 52k miles so I can see a few more claims on the horizon before the 80k limit is hit.
Peace of mind is the thing for me as bikes always go wrong between paydays or when you need them the most.

I have breakdown with my insurance but will never pay for the extended warranty. So over 2 years so far I have saved 2x renewals and 2x dealer service costs with no beakdowns. With conservative figures I am around £1000 better off so if my FD goes and I replace it myself I still have cash saved.

I've just renewed the warranty and breakdown cover on my Megamoto. I don't do massive miles on it, and probably won't ever need to claim, but it's peace of mind at the end of the day.:beerjug:

I had extended warranty on my last 1200 - haven't bother with this one and don't regret it

It's just insurance....I've paid car and bike insurance for 25 years and not made a single claim - would hate to add that cost up!

+1 Same here.:thumb2

I also bought a GS911 with the money saved. I had the GSA breakdown on me once - when I got it home I put the GS911 on and straight away diagnosed that it was the Wunderluch fuel controller that had packed up. So, that was fixed to without the need to get recovery to a dealer and more expense. I've had the FD bearing replaced already (£260 and BMW paid the bill out of warranty) plus you can get the whole FD rebuilt for under £400 now. I'm lucky that I enjoy working on my bike but I'm happier being quids in as well. Bit of luck involved as well - I'm sure those with multiple failures think differently.

exactly, there are probably a dozen answers to this question
if the bike is a vital means of transport and/or you dont have access to a good independant mechanic then warranty would seem safest

if you like me you could borrow the wifes car whilst you search out some non main stealer spares and get your mate to fit, then dont bother

personally i dont think that dealer repairs mean much at resale as long as you can prove that any repairs have been done fully and with decent kit

Never had it but then again I never take out extended warranties on anything.......

Had my GS 7 years now - 7x£350 is a lot of money saved, or if the worse came to the worse its gonna have to be a big bill to cost more than what I've saved. I guess also that as I could do most work myself I'm only ever looking at a parts bill.

Peace of mind is worth more to me than saving £310 (I have an excess) a year.

Paid £25 travel insurance on my old 1150, final drive went in Oslo, cost them £3500 to get me and the bike back home.

My 06 GSA has 36000 miles on it and has never missed a beat, but I am in no way technical and love the service at Bahnstormers so I prefer to know that a phone call and a wait by the side of the road is the worst i am going to get.

It does make me smile when folk say "I've had 2k worth of claims, so money well spent" :blagblah

Is that 2k in Beemer world OR what you could get it done for in the real world?

Was £1900 to replace tiny bits of corrosion that any normal dude would consider wear 'n' tear & really couldn't give a shite about?

BMW wouldn't do it without profit, they have done the sums and £360 makes money. This means that taking into account the whingers who will cry over every furred fastner, the average annual claim is going to be less than £300.

I spent my extended warranty on a Sargent seat, and 10 months on she hasn't missed a beat .... and if she does I'll get her patched up under the arches. :thumb
Same with my last 1200, 1 blown headlight bulb & saved a grand in warranty premiums.

Hang on a minute; if its going out of warranty why don't you just sell it and buy a new one:augie:D:hide

if you weren't part of this forum & hadn't been subjected to the sods law of things going wrong would you buy the extended warranty? fair enough if you do big mileage and far off tours across the globe then yep.or for approx £1.01 a day for additional piece of mind.its a personal thing, horses for different courses my bike hasn't skipped a beat,oh shit whats that rumbling sound:eek:

Thought about that, but as mine hasn't missed a beat in 36000 miles, I thought I would see how many it will do before it dies.

£310 a year for 10 years is still less than a years depreciation on a new one!!!

If your bike has survived the teething years, everything else will be wear and tear.

My 2004 1200GS has been warranty-less for as long as the standard warranty has expired.

Regard the FPC as a service item with a 3 year life. Carry a spare with you.

OE front discs just diagnosed as warped at 66k service.
