Extended Warranty - Yes or No?

What astonishes me is that there are still people buying these bikes. To quote "The Service Manager and his assistant all suggested quite strongly that I should fork out for the extended warranty as it will pay for itself". So they're admitting the bike will fail again. In effect they're poorly designed, unreliable over priced piles of crap. Who in their right mind would spent £14 - £15k.......??????

Yea, sorry about that ..... what I actually meant to say was "fuck off and never darken our door again you moaning twat"

Extended-Warranty-Yes-or-No

Exactly the response I expected. Only "joined" the forum for the Ride Reports" but the tales of high prices and shit quality do amuse me. You all know the Super Tenere is a better bike but you've all been seduced by the BMW brainwashing. Keep the insults coming....

I just forked out 358 pounds for my 1st extended warranty. Chose 50 excess. The lc is not that reliable. 7 faults in two years and it is in the dealers again this week!

It's not just the faults, it's the traipsing back & forth to the dealer which is a bind

On the bright side some GS 's have been fine - with no issues & others haven't

Bit like Russian roulette

there's a case for never having it serviced from new at the dealer..... have it serviced properly using quality products by some of the excellent independent service engineers on here... the warranty will still stand, buy your own insurance backed warranty with the cash you've saved over the first 2 years

I've taken a different view

Just renewed my warranty ( few days before its 2 years old )

As I've posted before , this bike has had no claims in 2 years and 12000 miles ( except a new mirror this week :augie )

But I want to change it next year for a new triple black

Now as I've had a few things done to this bike ( hilltop, full akro etc) ... I want to sell it privately ... And I think the benefit of a warranty will give assurance to a buyer

In the next 6 months I get the comfort of knowing, no big bills... IF something goes wrong. :thumb2

Well.... ive just recieved my extended warranty letter too.
Ive had no warranty claims over the two years and the bike has been great overall.
My dilema is that i only cover around 2k miles a year due to work commitments.
So....save the dosh and chance it. Or cough up and be sensible.?
There is also the possibility i may swap the bike next year....possibly!
What do we reckon?
I have breakdown/recovery with another provider and do all me own servicing...
cheers.

Hi,

If you do all your own servicing I believe this excludes you from the extended warranty? Last time I signed up you had to get your bike dealer serviced for extended warranty as it is not like the standard manufacturer warranty.

Happy to be corrected but this may have made your decision for you! :)

You will probably regret not going for the ZERO excess option if you ever have to make a claim

It does indeed

No longer the case see Post #45

BMW Motorrad Insured Warranty Terms and Conditions
What must I do to keep the Warranty valid?
The terms and conditions of the warranty listed below must be adhered to. Failure to do so will result in the rejection of a claim or the termination of your BMW Motorrad Insured Warranty. This does not affect your statutory rights.
1. a) Care of your motorcycle - You must keep your motorcycle in an efficient and road worthy condition and regularly service it in accordance with the Manufacturer’s recommendations and genuine parts, or parts of equivalent specification must be used.
b) After each service, please ensure that the relevant service details are completed in your service records by the servicing garage and obtain a receipt for the service. You must keep all such receipts for reference in the event of a claim.

No mention of BMW Dealer as previously mentioned in earlier Extended/Assured Warranty T&C's

Ok....so sevicing the bike yourself with bmw parts and correct oil etc will exclude me from obtaining the extended warranty?!....
Even if receipts for materials and bmw service schedule adhered to...?

If you take this to the extreme and let's say a refused claim goes to court. Can you prove your competence and can you prove the work was in dead done to the schedule? If so I can't see you having a problem. A workshop it's taken as a given that the mechanics are qualified and the work was done unless evidence says otherwise.

Ok..so keep the money and trade for something more reliable like the new xr when im ready. Say in the spring.
Think thats a better bet. The gs is good but i dont want it to turn into a mare.

I think this thread is about the WC and its reliability. :hide

In the main, the outgoing version was fairly bullet-proof, so I'm told. :bomb

Gotta say tho' I had the same sort of trials and tribulations with an RT when it was first released. BMW using their customer-base as test whores. :banghead:

BMW have been using customers as road testers for years, best model to buy is always the last in line before launch of new model. My R1150RT 2002 was last of single plug and still going minus the ABS which give up at 51,000, was removed and better for it.No other faults to complain about, home serviced as I know what is done. Bike was thrashed from day one to date and still going strong.Should have waited longer before buying GSA .
