Extended Warranty

Hi Chaps,

I have an F800GS with around 5500 Miles on the clock and about to reach the end of its BMW Warranty period.

What is the general consensus about BMW Motorrad Extended Warranties or for that matter Extended Warranties in general.

I look forward to your replies.

Warranty

It's all down to personal opinion, I know you can extend the BM Warranty when it comes to an end, once this lapses you can renew again but at extra cost, best to replace at end of period:D this also still gives you full european breakdown cover. Which if you are considering a trip you would need to fund if no BM warranty.
I have always done this, when the warranty expires, you only need one problem and that would normally blow the warranty price, worth the money even for peace of mind, plus a good selling point when you sell the bike on.

Hi Noel, at £350 I think, its worth taking it for covering the worry of something big breaking & you get roadside assistance thrown in for Europe (non toll roads mind).

You should of atleast one month before the end of the warranty been offered a renewal. If you didn't (even if you don't want it) its worth getting them aware if you suddenly change your mind say..
 
I am currently in the process of getting rid of an Aprilia Pegaso which died one day outside the warranty to replace it with an 800gs with a warranty as I have never been so frustrated with a bike in my life before. Sadly, these days bikes are not easy to work on and the cost of a warranty will be cheaper than one major repair. Personally, I'd go for it.
 
My take ... hmmm £350 / year, a quid a day ? Add your annual service costs to that and all of a sudden your costs could be upto £600/year before you even turn a wheel...

Talking about me and mine now...

I'm guessing that just about everything that could go wrong with it will have done by now, are any repairs that might be considered 'warrantable' going to cost more that the warranty cost itself.. If you think yes, then buy a warranty, but don't think that it will cover consumables (BMW will consider almost anything from now on as consumable) or service costs cos it won't ...

Personally, I'm going with a pared down service schedule, getting the ADs to do the minimum permissible to justify a stamp in the book...

No doom and gloom here eh?

Personally I'm with Greggers and Si Johnston on this one. I'd rather save the money and if something big goes wrong I'll source the parts myself.

Thanks for all of your opinions.
I personally agree with Greg, probably because I am against insurance companies as a whole.

To me it is like taking out medical cover just incase you get ill. Look after yourself and God willing you should stay fit.
If I have to pay BMW prices to service my bike to get the stamp (as Greg quite rightly suggested) and to keep my bike fit, then my bike should remain fit.
I have UK & European breakdown and recovery cover alongside my BMW insurance, so in theory I should be covered for that too.

Would I still benefit from any recalls after the bike comes out of the Warranty period ??

Noel,

Don't get it if you are "against insurance" because it is an insurance policy branded BMW but actually provided by Mondial assistance who provided the emergency recovery during the original warranty. The extended is not the same as the original as the original was underwritten by BMW themselves.

I see the most likely outcome is that you spend the £350 and nothing bad happens to your bike (which is the most probable outcome, otherwise insurance wouldn't work as a financial model).

The policy will not be as "comprehensive" as the original and I know that it will exclude corrosion which many have claimed on the "original" warranty provided by BMW themselves.

Recalls are different - generally to rectify a defect or vulnerability which could result in the manufacturer being the target of a public liability claim...

My KTM was recalled for a potential front wheel spoke failure in 2006 ... the bike is a 2000 model!
