F650/800 v R1200

Pretty sure the 12 has better power to weight ratio (HP, dry/fully fuelled figures from BMW site)

F800GS - 85hp 185/207 .45/.41
R12GSA -110hp 223/256 .49/.42

Doesn't make the 12 a better bike, and to mark2jag point, it also doesn't mean that you couldn't choose the right sprocket set to make the F8 a faster accelerating bike.

Based on the current spec its even bigger difference if you look at the STD R1200GS
F800GS - 85hp 185/207.45/.41
R12 non GSA -110hp 203/211 .54/.52
In the real world who notices the difference except when you are filling up!

But wait till they put the Nuda engine in the F series!!

Thats a 17% down on the power to weight but the 800gs is 25% down on new prices! for a tightwad Yorkshire Man thats a lot of cash to save £2600 on same spec bikes.
In the real world who notices the difference except when you are filling up! I ride both 2 up and solo on the 800GS and none of the boys on the 1200gs have had to wait for me, you just have to use the gearbox ( and what a sweetie that is in comparison!).
If you measure the length of the seat compared to the 1200gs its virtually the same a bit narrower but just get the seat fettled and its a great allround bike, but as said before its all down to personal choice.
Are they going to put the Nuda engine in the F series!!

Stick a 100kg rider and clothing on and power to weight ratios even up :thumb

How dare you under estimate my manly physique 110kg I'll have you know, and that's without clothing and before a full night of the
A proper tosser i've been told:rolleyes:!!

F800GS does it all!

I've done about 9500miles on my 30th Anniv F800, and I agree with most of the above. The main thing is it'll go anywhere a 12 will go at practically the same speeds, but use maybe 20% less fuel doing it. I didn't get left behind going up the A1M at 80-90ish in company with a 12GSA and a Mulitstrada the other week, and I know which was easier over Hardknott pass!
I did the Stella Alpina on mine last year and came home in two days from Nice. I did 623 miles from Dijon to York in a day, my highest ever. And the seat was fine!!
A lot complain about the seat, but maybe my ARSE (sorry, touch of Tourettes there..) has got used to it. I was going to get a comfort seat, but tbh I don't need it. A three hundred mile all day ride out is fine.
At the time, I must admit, I'd have gone for a 12, if I'd had the money but it would've been about £14k at least with all the toys on, and it was just too salty for me.
It's a great bike, and I can't see any reason now to get anything else. Not even touched my R80ST since I've had it!

Hi guys

Thanks for the compliments on the bike, it has been a long time in the making and if I could get some bigger pics on here I would so I will have a go later, the paint job was done local to me once I had given them a photoshop image of exactly what I wanted.

Regards

Mark

800 vs 1200

hi i have a 1200 gsa and my wife has a 800 gs we have just returned from a 3 week trip around span and France etc many times i wished that i was on the 800 i am 6ft2 and 18 st the little 800 is just so much fun.

IMHO :rob
It's about which one puts a smile on your face the most, from when you open the garage door or take off the cover, riding down the road, to climbing off it at the end of the day.

The little things niggle, (like a stone in your shoe) you need to look at yourself and understand what is important to you and these are much more critical than the purchase price, as that is soon forgotten compared to living with your choice.
Is it pleasing to your eyes,
which performs the best for you and your style of riding,
where do you ride the most,
solo or two up,
does/will the mpg niggle every time you fill it up
Are looks more important than appreciating the engineering,
Is the weight and balance right for you.
Other people opinions help to inform but does this expensive, selfish, hedonistic, luxury toy, warm your heart and put a smile on your face :)

For a while anyway. You need to ride them both and for far more than a hour. Unless you enjoy just swapping your bikes like some change socks.

:beerjug:

But what do I know I'm new around here. From a very pleased F800 Trophy rider, who wishes the 6th gear was just a bit taller, but nothing is perfect.

power to fat !
its the rider not the bike
if you want a light fun bike f800gs
if you want a bike for fat people the gs1200
if you want a man bike hp2e

I've done over 40K miles on my 650 twin, camping all the way and I have never been frustrated by the performance. 90mph all day, from Croatia to Calais (1000miles in 24 hrs) was fine except for the saddle. That trip was out to the middle of Turkey and back.

I have since paid £60 for a gel insert and that too is now fine.

What really suprised me was going two-up around the west coast of Ireland the week before last, again fully loaded for camping for two. With the extra weight I thought the mpg would plummet, but becuase I was going at much more sedate speeds (otherwise I had an earful through the Autocom) we were actually averaging 78mpg!

I got on Airhawk for my g/f on the back, and my gel insert was fine.

The only other thing to consider with all bikes is decent wind protection i.e. a screen that works and gets rid of most of the buffeting and wind noise that cause fatigue on longer journeys. That's another thread and down to personal choice, height, helmet etc.

All three bikes will do the job, but as others have said, either the 800 or the 650 twin win hands down on fuel economy and weight.

I'm off to Iceland in four and half weeks where i will almost certainly be picking up the bike from time to time on the dirt roads. Once you get the luggage off the 650/800 is a relatively light bike to pick up - much more so than the 1200. That's important when there is no one else around for miles to help you lift it.

People seem to obsess about power but i don't think I have ever thought I wanted more power for any given situation. You can cruise at 90mph, overtake pretty much everything on the road etc etc. If anything I have wished the bike was even lighter, and had a lower first gear for tricky off road stuff. Other than that, I will stick with it until the bike dies completely.

Been away for the weekend, my roomate had a F800GS

He had fitted a Corbin seat and I had a try of it, it was so comfy

Changed the bike for me

Plus it was so much more nimble and the mpg was fantastic - he was putting in around a gallon or so less than us on Boxers, at each fill-up

1200GSA or 800GS I don't think you can compare them I had a 2007 GSA in white (best colour)
Then I had a 2010 GSA in yellow both great bikes you cannot beat them for putting huge distance's in before you go for breakfast
Then I got 800GS Triple black only had it three days and had to change the seat for a comfort seat
Now a week later and 2000 miles on the clock am I happy with the change should of done it 2 years ago, just getting used to the noise of the main stand getting dragged around the islands :aidan

After trying both 800 and 700 GS's I opted for the 700.
I much prefer the 19" front wheel (I don't do off road), plus the 700 wheels are tubeless.
I've nothing against 21" front wheels but for me the 19" seems more natural and road biased.
To be fair, I've been a tad dismissive of the 21" option and never given it a lengthy test, probably a phycological thing.

I became tired of maneuvering my 1200GSA (2010) round the garage/driveway, hence the downsize.
It's such a joy to get the 700 out, which now feels like a push bike in comparison.

Performance...Not a lot of difference here. I ride solo and was impressed with this bikes motorway ability,
plus it's added competence on A/B roads.
Fuel range is 200+ and 65mpg.

The 1200 was a great bike and for me the ultimate tourer, but I have absolutely no regrets in changing to a 700 and wouldn't go back.
The only thing that would change this, is if my wife decided to ride pillion. That's the only department the 1200 wins.... two up touring.

I've also owned a R1200R but didn't get along with it. Still prefere the 700 over this as well.

I've had the bike four months with no regrets. Roll on summer. :thumb2

I looked at the 650 and the 700 and ended up with the F800gs thinking that bigger is better and more power=more fun and get the best you can afford. I ruled the 1150 and 1200 GS after i watched people struggle with them pushing them and low speed manoevering. I had a real problem picking up my brothers 1150gs and pushing it on a bit of gravel and i am not getting any younger. Even though i am 15 stone and six foot four i wish i had gone with the F700gs as it is lighter, lower and has tubeless wheels and a 19 inch front wheel which is better on the road and in reality i am unlikely to seriously off road my 800. The F800gs has some better bits on it but i put a 17 tooth front sprocket on it to make the gearing similar to the 650 as it cruises at motorway speeds at 500rpm lower and is not so jerky in first at small throttle openings. It has the power commander and has been mapped for smoother running as well as Remus de-cat headers and a fuel titanium rear can. There is something magical about the 1150/1200 boxers but for me the 800 does it all. I may still get a lightweight trail bike again just for local runs as well.
