F650 GS 2007- Odometer Fault- Dashes

I have a 2007 F650 with 3k miles on it. I have a strange issue with the odomoter and trip meter. The odometer shows only dashes and the trip has decided that it should display in km not miles. Its a uk bike with mph clocks etc. All the other dials and clocks are working fine.

I have pulled the dash apart, no corrosion, moisture or dry joints evident. I have cleaned the batter terminals and applied a small amount of vaseline to them, they are tight. I have also done the classic i.t. help desk routine of turn it off turn it back on again, by disconnecting the battery for 10 mins. The battery is fully charged.

There does appear to be a lot or wirring and clicking from the dash pod, not sure if this is normal?

Any suggestions gratefully recieved before I have to resort to a main dealer. There are identical posts on other forums but not outline the true cause or cure.

I have seen it suggested that less than perfect spark plugs can cause some odd instrument issues, not sure if this is true or a herring rouge?

This strange issue has manefested itself with my Dakar late (2006) the other day, the day it happened the bike ran rough and was very jerky as though it was in limp home mode, but that fault has cleared now. But the mileometer still shows - - - - - instead of mileage, the trip is very optimistic, possibly like you say registering the equivilent of km instead of miles, the speedo works as normal.
I have checked the chain gang site and people have had trouble with the speedo and abs lights, and the speedo sensor has been at fault but don't think that is the case for me and you. Don't really know what is causing the problem without it been checked out on diagnostic equipment. Will keep you posted if I make any progress just hope it doesn't need any new clocks dread to think how much they may cost . . .

Odometer Fault

Hi Friends,

Not sure if this helps.

A few weeks ago, I went on a run, and on returning, washed the bike down. When I came to put it away in the garage, I noticed the headlight bulb had blown. I'm sure it was ok on the run. Then I noticed that the clock had zeroed itself. So now I'm thinking, did the bulb just go and then shorted the clock, or did the water from the washing cause a short which blew the bulb and zeroed the clock? Having changed the bulb and reset the clock, all seems ok. Have either of you guys done some vigorous washing in the area of the clocks?

I hope you find an answer and share it with us all.

As i have only just bought the bike I cannot be 100% on what has happened but I have no reason to doubt the seller. I have checked the multi plugs behind the dash and the ecu for moisture and corrosion but have found nothing. I will carry on clutching at straws this week but have booked it into the dealers next week. They suspect a new dash being required but thats sounds a bit like a stock "we don't know how to fix it but we will replace parts until it works again!" kind of dealer answer.

When you booked it in to the dealers did they say that they would plug it in to the diognostic computer, and have they given you an idea on the price for a new unit, I dare not ring up for a price as i suspect it won't be cheap

Hi yes they want £48 to plug it into the diagnostics, they were talking replacement clock which isn't going to be cheap. 2nd hand they are £120 ish. will let you know what happens.

This may help, Have you tried cleaning the rear ABS sensor on the back wheel, this also works the speedo,

Cheers Andy yes have tried cleaning the speedo sensor, lo0ks all ok and the speedo itself works just not the mileometer cheers

Well the dealer diagnosed faulty clocks, £25 to come to that diagnosis and £230 ish for the clocks. Will post tomorrow if this does actually fix the problem. Will be trying to get the old ones fixed as a spare, so need to find a friendly electronics whizz as its beyond my limited abilities.

Well the good news is the clocks are a straight plug and play swap, and once fitted all is sorted, the bad news is the £225 to buy them, suppose it could be worse. Motorworks list some 2nd hand for half that.

I had a fault some months ago where the digit readout for the odometer & clock were blank. I turned out to be the main battery connections. A good wire brush scrub to the terminals of the battery and the cable-ends resolved it...

...I was getting ready to replace the clocks, and Yvonne at Motorworks was happy to supply a 2nd hand set for about £130 on a sale-or-return basis. Therefore if I had gone down that route and the fault wasn't clear on replacing them all I would've been out-of-pocket with was the return shipping cost to Motorworks.

Cheers for the tip on the battery connections, but that was the first thing I checked, but ta. Rang Motorworks but they don't have any secondhand ones at the moment (not having much luck). I also rang my local BMW dealer and they quoted £273 inc of vat so is £225 exc vat or is my friendly dealer a little bit expensive
