F650GS single resurrected as 2009 G650GS

It's not just the Merkins confusing everyone with their designations?

They're normally a year ahead so the F650 twin we have here now will be a 2009 model. And IIRC they didn't get the 650 twin till recently :(

I've heard about it on Advrider too

Why kill off a very successful seller

All the F650 series have been the top selling BMWs worldwide

Makes sense and as Flipfly says, they are a strong bike

They will use the uprated 53hp G650 Motor built in China under licence

Some people want a 650 single Tim, not everybody wants an 800 twin - different strokes for different folks

Nothing wrong with a 650 single, but the pricing doesn't make sense.

According to the website it's 10lb heavier than the 800cc F650GS. And it's using the older technology 50 bhp engine. Maybe they had some old engies sitting around they had to use up?

G650GS

I looked at one today at the local BMW dealer here in Anchorage, The Motorcycle Shop. The '09 F650GS twin was $10,300.00, the '09 G650GS single was $8,300.00. A $2,000.00 differance.

I'm more into dirt riding and just throwing them around on the showroom the G650GS single felt better. I think it maybe leans 10% more towards dirt then the twin. Both great bikes with each a place in the market IMHO.

Take care.

I read somewhere that the 650 'G' series are fitted with a 280w out put alternator (maybe this is where they got the extra 3bhp) as opposed to the 400w alternator fitted to the original f650gs.

So what has the 'new' G650gs been fitted with? A 280w would be a big disadvantage for those wanting to use extra lights, heated grips, heated jackets or charge the Laptop etc. :nenau

After seeing new 650 singles on offer in a german dealers this summer, swmbo asked a uk dealer about the possiabilitys of getting one......more or less inferred dont waste my time......:nenau

Do 70mpg, Mine don't :augie

Mine did 70mpg on our Europe trip this year :thumb2

I get approx 160 miles to a tank off road and over 200 on road (inc stelvio pass and various others :D:D:D:thumb2).

Gotta say I was amazed at how frugal the wee beastie can be.

same here, rode to Spain (through France) did a rally and rode home and it got 70.33mpg :D

650 single and twin are very similar fuel consumption wise on my commute, single at almost 70mpg and the twin at 65mpg.

If using anything above 5000rpm on the single though it can gulp the fuel down :(

Doesn't seem to matter how I ride on the road for fuel consumption. I can only guess I'm more areo dynamic than you John, that it to say I have very few sharp edges, bit like a pot bellied pig :D:D:D

Anyone know if they're planning to start selling the Dakar again as well?

The G650GS is the old F650GS. Still with 50 bhp and 400W alternator, according to the spec sheet. (http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/pdfs/spec/2009g650gs.pdf)

I believe these are the only changes from the old one:
- Black engine
- ABS and heated grips are standard
- The low suspension option now costs $175 (used to be free)
- Center stand is now a $150 option
- MSRP $7,670 (The F650GS-twin is $8,255, ex HG $250 and ABS $900)

This bike is for the US market only, and I suspect it will be short lived - until they have used enough of their parts. The Dakar was stopped long ago in the US (noone understands why), and has not returned.
