I don't have the heart to sell my 650 Dakar so I'm considering turning it in to a bit of a project bike. I've read about how great the Rallye bikes are and have wondered what it would take to upgrade my Dakar. I'm not really interested in the tanks for the extra range (170 odd miles is plenty for now) although they do look way cool  I'm more interested in the mods that will improve it's capability off-road.

So, my first question is: Is the Rallye bike really that much better? Second question: If so, which mods are the key that will make the difference?

Thanks for helping out a n00b :thumb2

Ask Timolgra.............his is the real deal

The Rallye bike is very different, it's not just the TT Kit for subframe and suspension, the motor has been worked on and they claim to get over 70HP from that little Rotax single

Check this out and read Post#400...............he's the engine builder:bow:bow

a) infinately, my Rallye bike is a hand built one off so a world apart from a standard bike, I owned a fairly standard 650 Dakar and sold it since for my uses I thought it rubbish. The power delivery is also completely different on the Rallye bike ie, it's instant whereas the 650 GS needs to be revved before it eventually decides wheeze it's way to a bit of speed.

b) all of them, the key ones I suppose are junk the exhaust and fit a Scorpion can or similar with K&N air filter, front forks are Marzzochi, rear shock is White power WP, change the gearing
Decent wheel rims and an 18" rear, seat, bars etc etc etc.
A bit of info on my Rallye bike here http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=121713&highlight=mistress

Obviously not all the work done on my bike is necessary for a day to day bike, but if that's all you want buy a 640 KTM which is a much better starting point than the 650 GS, although perhaps not as reliable long term.

A bike like Tim's would cost about £28k to build from new:eek::eek:, including the cost of the donor bike of a new Dakar worth about £6k

Sell the Dakar (thye're not that special) and keep the HP2:thumb

XChallenges are pretty cheap at present:augie

Thanks for the replies chaps :thumb2

Timolgra - I'll check out the your thread in more detail... Do you have any idea what they did to the engine to get so much more power out? I can't imagine a scorpian can and decent airfilter gave more than an extra 5hp. An extra 10% is not to be sniffed at, but is by no means 70HP

Johnny - there is no way I'm selling the HP2. I already own the Dakar with nothing oweing on it. It is also my first bike that I bought after passing my test last year - being a sentimental old bugger, I haven't the heart to sell it. I'd like to learn more about working on bikes and I can't really get motivated to take it apart for the sake of it, so turning it in to the bike it's supposed to be is rather tempting. Besides... weren't you making an offer an a Dakar recently :augie

Thanks again for your replies :thumb

My engine was 'blue printed', head gas flowed and I think the ECU is chipped or reprogramed I'm not sure.

I had a look at Henry's............but passed it up and Kenny bought it

I've already had 2 Dakars.............so I know they're offroad weaknesses, as Tim's described

Just bought a nearly new XChallenge today, for the price of a 2-3 year old Dakar.............that should fit the offroad bill nicely...... as a poor Yorkshireman's HP2:augie
