F700 Screen Solution

Kate, thanks again for your help on this.

For better or worse I've ordered an adjustable Givi screen (which required a lot of squinting as I gave payment details...ouch!) as I was having feck-all luck finding an 08-12 standard screen. Judging by these recent posts I appear to have been looking in the wrong place or for the wrong thing. Doh.

Anyway, here's hoping this beast of a screen I've bought does the job. If not it'll make a useful shield during the zombie apocalypse.

Thanks again. I'll keep my eye out for your friends' engine guards if they proceed with them.

Hi Mark, is the Givi for a 700 or do you have to buy the BMW adaptor?

I was the top bidder and a friend came over and when he went you out bid me by a bloody quid, there's another one the same on there now and it's at £41.
You got a bargain my friend.

Sounds like I got lucky... was a bit surprised to get it for the price I paid - I probably owe your friend a pint!

I did see a Givi one in their site for the F700 that attached on the four bolts plus appeared to bolt on under the two side pieces as well.

Couldn't find it in any online shops though - only the ones that need adapters.

Well I finally bought a aftermarket F800GS screen from eBay.
Marked it out from my standard screen and cut to shape, fitted a treat and was a happy chappy.

Today I rode it for the first time with the screen and thought it was fantastic, no wind in the chest and hardly any to the head.
It was very misty up over the hills this morning and that's when I noticed 2 problems.

1/ there is now no wind on my visor to help keep it clear, so wet gloves.
2/ and this was a major 2. There seems to be a bit of turbulence under my peak on the helmet that was making a little bit more noise than before but more importantly it was forcing water under the top of my visor and running down the inside. Not a good thing.

Tried adjusting the peak but this made no difference.
The screen I bought is a touch higher than the standard F800GS screen, so I guess if I was to shorten it a bit then this would lower the air flow and hopefully fix both issues. Or am I wrong.

My Anniversary F650 has the 800 screen. The wind stays off my chest but hits the visor - this must be a familiar scenario to sports bike riders.

There is a certain importance to quality earplugs (customs would be nice) and a quiet helmet but it is making an excellent summer bike in its standard form.

I'm not going to chase bigger screens, luggage etc as I have all that on my '92 r100r and if the Annie becomes too cold in the winter I'll switch over to the Boxer, just in time for the salt.

Musical bikes is getting me down so I have great hopes for this bike - I love the 70+ mpg !!!!

Seriously though, possibly spend the money on custom earplugs before you spend time andmoney chasing your tail with screen upgrades.

Ride safe.

It's not the noise that's an issue, it is still quieter than my last helmet and wind blast on my street triple.
It's the forced water in the visor that's an issue due to the wind turbulence at peak height.
I'm think an inch lower screen would lower air flow to visor area,
If I crouch lower then the blast misses the helmet all together, so opposite should apply.

Try a portion of old visor held on with anything that does no damage (clothes pegs, bulldog clips whatever) clipped to your original screen to obtain the optimum height.

Sadly this can change with wind direction etc so screens/ screen heights are an art form all of their own.

Best screen on God's earth is the BMW full screen on my Boxer. Unfortunately with that comes 42 mpg, no Abs and loads of fettling

You could try increasing the indent in the middle of the top of the screen - should direct some of the air towards your helmet but a bit lower down, whilst still directing the majority of the air up and over your shoulders/chest.

I got plenty of time so I will lower the indent like you said Gipsy and just keep reshaping bit by bit till I get it right .
Enjoyed the fact that I had no pressure on my chest and shoulders though.

The reason for the visor fogging was that I had no airflow to the chin vent, so was not getting any airflow in to the helmet.

Well I have had to trim it 3 times now and it's now about 1and a half inches shorter, I have also made the cut out slightly bigger, but now the air is hitting the chin vent and my visor stays clear, there is still no pressure on my chest or shoulders and even the noise level and buffeting is to a level that is un-noticeable.
All in all a very happy chappie, it even looks good in the flesh.

Nice. Glad you got it sorted.

You'll be after Adrian Newey's job next with your new found aerodynamic skills :D
