Just had my first MOT and received an advisory notice re my front brakes fluctuating on the brake test.
When I took the calipers off there was considerable uneven wear on the pads. I discovered that the calipers were not sliding on their pins. The nearside caliper when I took it apart I found that one of the pins was very rusty and no trace of any grease. A bit of fine emery paper and liberal use of grease and the caliper now slides. The offside caliper required the use of a blow torch and hammer to release the caliper from the pins. On close inspection no grease on both pins. After some emery paper and grease there was too much play in the slides resulting in the caliper twisting on the pins when the brakes applied. I got a second hand caliper from Motorworks and new pads. Checked the discs for for warp and require new discs.
I use the bike all year round and have done 28000 miles from new. Lesson learnt, every year strip and lubricate the pins.
