F8 GS Sump Guard

Looking around the market at sump guards for the F8 I have seen figures varying considerably, some stupidly so , the dearest being the best part of £165.00!

So, my questions to fellow F8O's are:-

1) What do you consider to be an acceptable cost for a sump guard?
2) What material and finish would you prefer- powder coated aluminium or deep etched anodise?
3) 4mm or 5mm aluminium plate?

cant remember the cost but had it powder coated Black my choice.

I would like a sump guard for mine but i`m not spending the thick end of £160.I don`t use mine off road so for me it`s the look not the protection,i suppose £50-£80 would be my price of choice(or cheaper).4mm would do my purposes,however its finished.Are you thinking of making some?

Surely it was merely a question of encouraged interest in Model specific problems, help and advice > 650 & 800 GS Twins that the Op seeked.

I read it as what do you think, Have, use, want. not a bad post from a fellow 798 owner. Albeit a thread full of the answer to one two and three as I Indicated earlier see above post.

I would like a sump guard for mine but i`m not spending the thick end of £160.I don`t use mine off road so for me it`s the look not the protection,i suppose £50-£80 would be my price of choice(or cheaper).4mm would do my purposes,however its finished.Are you thinking of making some?

on the flip side I do and will go off road and Its protection Insurance cheaper than it not Being there, Bash plate is Bashed Bike is Mintier than a mint thing.

Not at all. Just find it funny that grown ups can't make a decision on their own these days, but have to have everyone else's opinion. Even on things as subjective as colour and price - which are TOTALLY down to the individual.

The Facebook generation perhaps?

If he'd asked for opinions on quality, strength, ease of fitment, best price/service, and for those that have been off road any damage sustained I'd have quite happily given my opinions!

Unlike Chas820 it would appear that you are incapable of thinking outside of the box and because this thought process is seemingly beyond you, you jump in with both feet , deeper and deeper!

FYI this 'grown up' is fully capable of making decisions and can make them without input from anybody else.

Let's skip the nonsense and go straight to your questions.

1) The use for me to know is so that I can perhaps help YOU with YOUR money!

No, the guard I 'may' make for customers will not be for MY bike, they will be for YOUR bikes!

Why do I need to ask about ease of fitment? Are 5 bolts too much effort for you? Perhaps a magnetic guard would suit?

Price? Go back to the beginning!

Damage sustained? You want the sump guard to outlast the chassis? How about rubber? Do you have the skills required to give the F8GS a hard time off road or is it because you find yourself constantly picking it up off the floor?

Did TT and all the other aftermarket suppliers ask what YOU , the customer, would like for your bike and how much YOU would like to pay?
Do the BBC ask what YOU want to watch and how much YOUR license should be?
Do the govt ask what price fuel YOU think is fair?

No , but I did!

Now ask me again if I am capable of making decisions on my own?

No I would deff not go for magnetic Guard might look cool on the fridge door though in Black (i got a white fridge)

I've been a machinist for over 30 yrs and no, that's not what I said. But can you tell everyone the benefits of aircraft spec aluminium over a lesser grade for a sump guard? Do you want a guard with fancy numbers in its description or a guard that does the job? Or perhaps neither!

1) Ideally less than £90. If you got them less than £50 then it would be a no brainer.

2) Form over Function? tbh, although it goes against my normal philosophy I'd suggest looks and access are more important than protection. Black or Titanium powder coating would be ideal.

3) So long as it's stronger than the factory plastic item, then it doesn't really matter.

Most sump guards are farkles for bikes rarely (if ever) taken off-road. Lightness and ease of fitting would be my priority. Make sure you have access to the sump plug and oil filter without having to strip it to bits. If it could be fitted using the standard mounts then the whole jobs easier.

Bring out something cheap cheeful and attractive, and leave the big boys to the £165 jobbies.

Why wouldn't you? Cuz it would help those who don't catch on so quickly like me!

Now I got it, I'd say that black would be better than plain - I have a Metal Mule plate in bare alloy, and would have preferred it black.

No idea on cost as it was fitted when I bought it. I guess it depends on whether you're aiming at the cosmetic end of the market or the real off roaders...

Having done some pretty tough off-road trails in Morocco, I say the stronger the better - ended up on the plate several times with a very heavy thud!

"Aircraft grade" alloy covers such a wide spectrum of properties its not really a conversation for this thread...

+1 for the BMW model... There is one on ebay, item number: 300598640778, starting at £75

I added the Touratech tool box to mine, very useful space, and painted it all black (along with all the other silver alu bits). I used an acid etch primer first to prepare the alloy surface to take the paint. I should have given it a protective lacquer coat too but I didn't bother, maybe when I touch up I will, but it's doing okay.

The black is much better IMHO.

Why not make two kinds. One for the off roaders and one for the people who just want to keep the crap off the front of the engine. Unfortunately I am of the latter. I am too old to take to the dirt, but I also do not want to pay the extortionate prices just to keep my engine cow pat free.
