Headlights

I have had the missfortune to crack the headlight glass to the 800. Spoke to Chandlers today and a replacement is £245.00:eek: and they do not do just a glass replacement you need to purchase the whole unit, so much for recycling.

Anyone have a good seconhand spare or any other ideas?

I've got a tiny chip on my main-beam glass. So i've got a headlamp protector now. Lesson learned when following fellow gser's on dirty chipped tarmac.

You know what, someone on here will buy the old unit of yours. Please take some pictures & use this site for easy upload of images. www.pict.com

If you need help, pm me.

How did it happen...............well there is a story!!

I was about 100km outside of Ulaan Baatar off road, only doing about 15kph on what I would call a mogul field, came to the top of a deep one, pulled left to miss and the front wheel when down broke the Metal Mule screen, bent the left pannier frame, bent the gear lever and cracked the headlight and yes I did have engine bars and a headlight protector.

Funny really as i came off at about 100kph a few days earlier on a track and did no damage whatsoever except for scratching the left engine bar.

Out of the four types of bike to go (new Tenere, F650, 1200 GSA and 800 GS) the 800 was the most reliable and best all rounder, not just in my opinion. The Tenere were not good and one did not make it, they ate chains and sprockets, cush drives were made of putty, head bearings were crap and they drank oil as if it was going out of fashion.

I am now doing a minor rebuild to mine, I need to replace the rear wheel bearings, replace the oil to the front forks, I have had the ohlins rear rebuilt, the lambda sensor needs replacing, the Rhemus pipe bracket split and I am replacing the original and the right heated grip stopped working on the last day into NY and a bloody good clean!

One pain was the top hose, this was repaired by recall before I left but kept failing and in the end I glued it and jubilee clip which is ok but I will sort out correctly now, obviously BMW still have a problem here.

Hats off to the scott oiler, one sprocket and chain (original) to South Korea, approx 16,000 and really the chain and rear sprocket would have been ok for several thousand more, the front sprocket was worn however.

Do you wish that you never asked........? :)

Headlamp has huge crack in it..where & when is anyones guess.

So tomorrow I will be speaking to BMW wollaston about warranty? I've done no off-roading & I had found a small stone chip months & months ago on one of AdamA's rideouts. So invested in a headlamp protector, somehow from the stone-chip its cracked into & across onto part of the full-beam area.

Seriously anyone remember who had a UK spec headlamp for sale?? Can't believe it really, my HID's are 35w so I'm not going to blame them as such but I did use my bike for a good 14-hours of playing about.

Car drivers have been flashing there lights the past few nights & it doesn't seem like its effected the throw of the beam. Its more subtle & must produce a sharp glinting effect is all I can think as to peoples discomfort. (I cannot tell any difference with bike facing a wall & lights full blast.

Pictures to follow.

Paddy mate ...

It's not going to be worth talking to BMW - Santrix is right I fear ...

However, I've been looking for a 'damaged' headlamp for a project that I've been thinking about ... if you do replace it I can think of a very worthy cause to which the expired lamp might be donated ...:augie

Sincerely yours

Greg

:duno errr you crack the headlight glass and that's BMW's fault? Interesting line of thought.

ahhh and here we have the evidence. :D I remember AdamA's rideout group once passed Stevie73's rideout group so fast that he nearly bent the space time continuum. Stones and meteorites are a hazard when you are slowing down from warp speed (See the millennium Falcon in Star Wars)

So invested in a headlamp protector, somehow from the stone-chip its cracked into & across onto part of the full-beam area.

barn doors, horses and bolted me thinks...

Apologies for the lack of sympathy. I know what a bummer it is as my headlight is fecked also due the HID's burning the lens. But that's my fault for modding a perfectly working headlight.

one guy replaced the front lens with a piece of lexan and siliconed it on.

Sorry to here about your light Paddy

not sure what the fix is but theres a few doing these polycarbonate thingies, cheaper than chips in the long run if you will excuse the pun. just a future protection thought :thumb2

maybe protection farkles is our future warranty :nenau a lot of peeps on the forum cant see the point of add on bling but when it doubles as protection, extra comfort levels or making the bike just suit you better:thumb2

I've acted an tit in this thread & take your advice on-board Jon.

Greg still happy to let you have it, once I replace it.

Jessehere, if I started hacking the front off I'd break the inner reflective structure. I know my limits, prefer watching others mod stuff.

:beerjug: You know Gunz between me, you and Greggers I reckon we have nothing to lose to hack at these headlights. The chrome on my lens has burnt off, your glass is fecked and I've forgotten what is wrong withe Greggers' light but I would certainly attempt to remove the glass and try and repair the chrome. Maybe get it coated again. The cost of these headlights is pretty steep.

What would be really cool is if we could make a HID that dipped and changed angle so that if you travelled abroad or needed to adjust the angle you could so so easily.

mmm thoughts....

Ok - my idea...

Jon, it's not really feasible to re-aluminise the reflector, economies of scale and all that, besides which I think that it's pretty much glued in at the factory.

Regarding lexan on the front - well I did that and got away with it on my Katy, but I had to remove all the broken lens first and cut my replacement to fit. In this case - as is the same with the 800 - the reflector does all the work, so I'm pretty sure you could get away with a plain lexan replacement if there's a lip or something inside the 800 lamp housing to sit it on.

My idea ... to cut a big hole in the back of the lamp housing, then one in the reflector (which in this plan becomes cosmetic) and insert one of these babies

HId and projector... where does that go wrong?

Greggers I am happy to collaborate on a joint project with you on this. How much are those lights and where did you see them?

I spotted someone doing similar to a Kawasaki and I reckon I could make it a goer on the 800. I have nothing to lose.

Those projectors are here

Jon ... do you know where Walter got his units from? I remember reading that they were from an A6, but would be interested to know which model etc..

Cheers

I'll ask him tomorrow and get the details posted on here. From memory they were either A6 or A4 and the chappie that lives in Kent that wired up Charley Boormans "By any means" bike did the electrics for them.
