F800 GS temperature display

Hi

Rode into London today from Surrey and during the journey temperature display reached -3. However this has not changed and remains at -3 even though I know its a lot warmer. Have turned the ignition off and on to see if it would clear/reset but no luck.

I assume the sensor has packed up?

Any ideas

The temperature sensor on the 800 should be tucked away so it isn't affected (so much) by the airflow whilst the bikes being ridden, so slapping a termometer on the handlebars won't prove much.

Not sure there the temperature sensor it, any change it could have been wet from last night and collected ice? Guessing a bit there.

But they could compare the readings to the "faulty" one and if both keep at the same temperature .... :blast

WTF it should be in the airflow to read the ambient temperature correctly.

The location of the probe is on top of the beak under the headlight.
 
thanks for the replies.

Seems to have sorted itself out. was still showing -3 on the way home when clearly well above freezing, but on this mornings commute it is working fine and reading 7.5

I assume it was just a blip and normal service has now resummed!

Do not embrace victory...

I own a 2012 F800gs and the sensor had been changed twice and still freezes at the temperature it start in the morning. Sometimes during the day shows the current temperature and sometimes shows the temperature when I started the bike.

I am claiming warranty, it is a well known issue but they do not know how to fix it.

Windchill is only an apparent effect to objects that contain an heat source, generally this is in relation to a human being, it is to do with how quickly the body heat is carried away.

Windchill is how cold it feels to a human, not the real air temperature. Weather sites give higher windchill as the wind speed increases because it cools the body quicker, however the ambient temperature is still the same no matter how fast the wind blows.

A temperature probe is not a heat source, it can be going at 0mph or 100mph if the air temperature is the same then the reading from the probe will be the same at both speeds.

For an ice warning the probe needs to be in the air flow to avoid heat pockets from the engine especially when the bike is stationary.

The other thing to consider is that the sensor is some way off the road level. Motorways in Poland have screens showing two temperature readings, the ambient air temperature and the ground level temperature, and in cold weather the ground can be several degrees lower.

This is one of the reasons the temp gauge starts flashing (ice warning) when the ambient temperature reaches 3 degrees. The other reason is that dips in roads near rivers can have lower temperatures, so best warn in advance.
 
Well I have learnt a few things now and beg forgiveness of the assembled masses, got my head around it now - thanks to the explanations here and further reading.

Consider me both humbled and a little wiser;)
