I've just picked up an F800gs from a mate, he had a coming together with a car and it was written off as a cat d. I'm buying it off him as salvage to get back on the road.
It seems there's been some dodgy goings on since it left his local BMW dealer for assessment and coming back to us.
The mileage has gone up by 11 miles, the realtively new rear tyre has been squared to death by someone doing a burnout. The undertray and shock is caked in rubber debris. And the undamaged clutch lever has mysteriously become scuffed and broken at the end.

The reason I'm here posting is to ask about the sidestand. The bike leans over way too far, I suspect they have also nicked the stand and replaced it with the wrong type.
The one on now has the numbers '897' embossed at the top and is about 340mm long from the pivot to the base plate.

Could someone confirm if this is the correct stand or indeed if this has been altered without our knowledge?

Cheers,
Ben

Just measured mine 897 is right and the length is a fraction over 34cm from the centre of the pivot to the foot, it does have a slight bend or kink in it about half way down.

Hope this helps.

Which dealer....?

F800GS sidestands can indeed bend, mine did and I had to replace it.

It didn't help that for a while***, I was mounting the bike by putting my left foot on the peg and swinging my other leg over, while the bike was on its sidestand...

***probably about a year, at a guess (I'm about 13 and a half stone and 5 foot 7...:D)

I did that all the time until I read this !

There are 2 bushes that hold the stand pivot bolt in. If undone, it is easy to loose one. They also wear. Check the tightness of the bolt, then see if there is any play.

Bushes were checked and found OK, I didn't lose any, they weren't worn. Sidestand was very definitely bent, and obvious when compared against a new bike - the angle of bend was clearly different on mine. New stand made a big difference.

Cheers for the advice, after reading the extensive thread on AdvRider, it does appear the stand is indeed bent.
It was fine when my mate had it, so I'm inclined to believe the bike was ratchet strapped down when on it's side stand, thus bending it in the process.

We don't think the dealer was responsible, they even marked on tyre depth on the assessment sheet, they'd have to be a bit daft to then go and burn out the tyre to a slick.
The bike went to Copart from the dealer, it can only have been them that ragged it. Not very professional behaviour when essentially the bike still belonged to my mate.
Hopefully the insurance company will sort something out, as he's complained to the managing director.

Exactly what Brittany Ferries did to mine (except mine snapped). French welding wasn't up to much, and 1 week with just the centre stand wasn't much fun.
