sidestand switch

Hi all I've just returned from Scotland. I hope someone can help the side stand switch wire that leads to the fuse box where it plugs in has been melting and letting off a lot of smoke luckily enough I was close to home so I made it. Could anyone tell me what the problem is? Can I repair it or need a new switch? Thanks all also the bike now starts with the sidestand down never done this before

should of said its a 1100 gs no coils its the wire from the side stand switch melted all the way up to the plug near fuse box.

Presumably the switch is shorting out, probably corroded internally &/or done it's time .........

Check it out with a meter. If it's finished, disconnect for now if you need to get somewhere, replace asap for safety sake - essential for MOT.

Explain please, or are you just adding a throwaway confusion?

Bike with full lighting set. No switch = no brakelight showing when applying rear brake = no MOT.

if disconnect will not prime fuel pump.

I understand that the cutout switch is not part of the MOT. Hope that's right as I managed to break mine fitting a new bush (pillock that I am) - twisted the wires together so the bike runs. Damn switch is expensive too and I need tyres first.

he’s talking about the side stand switch, not the brake switch. all the lights will still work with the side stand switch bypassed, and it is not tested as part of the mot.

ynot - the side stand switch on your 1100 should only have 2 wires. follow the switch wiring up to where it meets the loom and disconnect it. With the ignition on, measure the voltage between the two contacts in the connector, you said that the whole wire had burned out / melted and that doesn't sound right to me so best to check whats running through it.

If all is ok, you can either bypass the switch by simply jumpering the wires together (green/red and green/yellow) or replace the whole thing with a used one from somewhere like motorworks (£50, ELT06060) or phone sherlocks see if they have one off a breaker.

cheers gog think a bare wire has been touching the frame would this cause the melting!!!! anyway motor works one on way.thanks everyone
