Hi Guys,

just a quick one to clear some doubts regarding the 12k service I have just done, according to the experiences I am reading here I feel I might have been a bit overcharged, just to clarify, I am not complaining if this is the correct price but I want to make sure it is justified as 344£ for a regular service sounds a lot to me (includes 15.00£ of loan bike), this was just for the regular service, nothing extra added.

Many thanks in advance

It may be more than the 6k as i think this one has the valve clearances check. Worth checking the bill for this. For peace of mind, if you call round a few Motorrad garages they should have fairly standardised pricing and give you a quote straight away.

Admittedly, I haven't had mine in since the warranty expired but i think BMW labour rates are about £90 - £120 / hour. Do post up if you get a current figure.

Best,

S

The 12 k includes the valve clearance check , I done my service myself but didn't do the valve clearances all the info on here led me to believe that they probally hadn't changed, so I thought I'd leave them, I use to use bm for all my servicing needs, but now I have ago myself although I'm no Mech:thumb

Not sure but...

If you are still under warranty than you will have to pay the piper i'm afraid. As stated most BMW dealers / service centres charge similar rates in my experiences of a few.
If you are out of warranty then I wouldn't touch another BMW service centre with a barge pole unless absolutely essential. I had a shocking experience the last time I had a BMW service, shocking to the tune of £1500 bill on a 12000mile service (I bought the bike used at 9000 miles). No end of issues with various bits and bobs, apparently?!! including, supposedly requiring a complete new clutch (at 12000miles???!!!)

Finally got the bill down to £900 inc clutch new plates. Was told at the time the basket would not last that much longer and would probably need doing next service. BOLLOX! Bikes now at just under 40000 miles and no clutch issues at all. Makes me think what other cods whallop was spouted at the time, convincing me of other bits that needed replacing.

Anyway got my self a great trustworthy independent non BMW specialist garage for major services and now do all minor stuff myself. Saves me a fortune and piece of mind at service time.

My tip, avoid BMW service centres unless you have a bottomless supply of cash money and the inclination to bend over for BMW.

Got a full service carried out on my F800 recently by an independent service agent at 20,000km.
All genuine Bmw parts used ..top of the range Castrol oil , brake fluid changed , plugs etc. Also replaced a leaky valve cover gasket with new Bmw modified one. All used replaced items presented to me on collection.

Service cost £240 or in Euro €300 .
They also replaced/fitted the front tyre (Metz Tourance) for £80 or in Euro €100

Also offered me a replacement bike for three days which I did not avail of.....very very happy with the level of service received which I have never got from BMW (ever).

+1 I never rated them much either but that's the dealership in my area, good to hear you got tiptop service:thumby:

Thank you all for your replies.

the warranty is due to expire next January so I'll soon start looking for a good mechanic around my area (if someone knows one around North London that would be great) and buy a good tool set for minor maintenance.

I am posting my 12k bill just for reference in case it might be useful for somebody.

Whale oil beef hooked!

56 quid for oil!!???

bloody hell what did they use, cold pressed virgin olive oil? black truffle oil? Whale oil?

The bill shows that you have been charged for 4 units of oil. Are those units litres? Strange because according to my handbook the capacity is 2.9L with a filter change.
Like many other Bmw bills I've seen, this one is hard decipher what you've actually been charge for. Nevertheless, the oil charge seems wrong.

Once past January try Jap and German in Druid Street. (In London just south of Tower Bridge.) They are BMW trained techs now working for themselves - and charge about half the hourly rates!
Plus they know what you really should get from Motorrad and what is better from somewhere else.
The workshop isn't as clean'n'shiny as your official dealer - but that's why they're cheaper.
Good guys who know what they doing and wont rip you off. Highly recommended.

My understanding was that if the bike has been serviced using genuine parts at the recommended service intervals then even if your friendly independent has serviced it the warranty is still valid.
And yes I realise you will get support from your dealer in the event of a warranty claim if you have been getting it serviced there.

It's of most use to you - you appear to have been over charged for oil. Would you not check the bill in a restaurant?

As previously said, you don't need to have the servicing done at a main dealer to maintain the warranty. I have saved a fortune by taking my car to an independent garage, and I still had warranty work done with no issues (other than the dealer being pissed off that we don't service it there!). As long as the garage is VAT registered and uses genuine parts, you're covered.

Ahoy. This April I was quoted £201 including VAT for a 12,000 mile / 2 year annual service from my local Motorrad.

The listed task codes were the same as yours. However, there was no cost breakdown into parts and labour, and no list of consumables.

That's what I was quoted. It looked suspiciously cheap considering the work involved in doing the clearance checks (and the gasket replacement).

What it would actually have cost I didn't find out, since I was advised by several local owners that that outfit are notorious for doing un-agreed work even when specifically instructed not to, or just flat out billing for work that wasn't actually done.

Given that they'd initially handed over my freshly "approved used" GS with a pissing fork seal, I already had no basis to trust them, so it went to my local independent instead to get the oil and filters done, and sod the clearances and resetting the service nag.

He then proceeded to "forget" to change the air filter, even though we'd agreed that in writing.

The hoops we jump through just to get a stamp in a book.

Had my 12k done and was quoted around £250 to £300, had a call on way back to collect that said the rear pads needing replacing, ok go for it I said.

3 hours later the guy comes out and tells me the pistons had jammed and they needed to heat them up but should not be much longer, hour and a half later he's back with keys to a loan bike, seems they melted the seals and had to get some in which would be 2 days later.

Off home I go then think, how much is this adding to the bill, called back and same guy same about £50 so was looking at £400 or less, called 2 days later to check and was told the seals are in and they are fitting them and to call back in an hour.

Called back and all is done, nice what's the bill and I will collect this afternoon, she said she would check and send me a text, text arrived and I almost dropped my coffee, £895 all in :blast

Needless to say I was on the phone and asking how the bill had jumped so much, she came back with a load of old guff and said I should not have been given a quote etc, still not happy I asked her to double check as it seemed a tad much to me, so off she went.

10 mins later get a call back to say 'Opps our error, the guy who did the service put the labour cost in twice and it should be £525' :( and that was as low as it got.

They did give me a nice voucher to spend which would give me £50 off any bits I night buy from them in the next month lol

Bike now goes to my local Yamaha dealer who is much better and even has the kit to reset service codes etc.
