'Red1' - Servicing isn't that bad. I can't speak on behalf of the 18k however mine is going in for the 12k next week. Its roughly about £280's from BMW. Which is reasonable seeing the job they do.
On my own thoughts since owning an F800GS since November i cannot fault it at all! I just did 2200ish miles last week in France on a 9 day trip and i didn't have one issue with it. Even in temperatures of 31 degrees. The bike handles the restriction perfect (When to be honest i asked BMW about a restriction they sort of laughed re power) But to me its more than enough on a British road. They are however reasonably heavy and luckily i have never dropped the bike and wouldn't want to as its pretty huge.
Apart from that everything is superb and I've done just over 6000 miles since owning the bike and its never needed to use warranty of breakdown service or go into the dealership. These miles have been in heavy rain, snow and sunshine. Not once has it ever let me down!
Outstanding bikes i would keep mine however i now need more luggage space due a commitment i have.
