F8GS Fuel Throw Back

In the first weeks of ownership I had no problems when refuelling but recently I've found that refuelling cannot be done at the full rate due to fuel spraying back out the filler cap. Regardless of what angle I hold the filler nozzle, or how far in, I cannot prevent this happening and have to resort to slow filling.

Anyone else have this problem?

Yes some pumps are a bit lively with faster delivery but squeezing the pump trigger slowly and less as you mention but i do that with all pumbs now to judge there speed and the delivery slows hey presto

I'd describe it as a quirk so yes to your question.

Wish trading-standards would check out my three local fuel-stations for weights&measures. Because they vary wildly on filling my tank up.

mmmm high pressure fuel pump designed to fill up cars and their large tanks and then you wonder why you have problems filling up that little 16 litre tank.

Are you new to motorcycling??

Considering I have probably had far more bikes in my time than you have years and never had this problem on any of them, have a guess?

Its usual to see fuel surge out of the filler when starting to fuel up. I borrowed a Tiger 800 recently, the fuel filler hole is so big you can see the pump and level detector in the tank, to protect these a grill is fitted inside the tank. The next borrowed bike was a Suzuki V strom 650. This had a similar filler to the BM but because the nozzle points vertically down did not spurt back at all. I think the small filler hole is to prevent you using the diesel pump by mistake,

Filling the bike ...? It can be a right pain in the arse and you need to get the angle of the nozzle right otherwise you've dumped a quidsworth on the forecourt before any hits the bottom of the tank!

The only saving grace is, with only 16 and a bit litres to fill, it doesn't take too long.

I did try numerous positions to not much avail. I'm sure I'll adapt to this little foible, I had enough adapting to do with Guzzi ownership so shouldn't be too much of an issue. As others have implied/verified, nature of the beast then.

As for Marks comments, fluffing up of the feathers no doubt.

When I couldn't get the filler to work properly in the hole, I just put it down to my advancing years.

Filling

I always fill on the side stand and only ever get splash back on the last litre going in if the gun is on full bore.
It's something you get used to and learn to back off whilst watching the pump display coming to the near full limit, if you know how much you have used of course (full computer users only).
