Told yesterday that the new bike's being built and was wondering if anybody has any experience of collecting from the factory.I know this exists for army bods based over there but no doubt the less than helpful British importer won't want to help. Any comments most welcome.

Don't know about BM but I know Mercedes UK where very helpful in collection of a new SLK from the factory. But if memory serves its not the most straight forward thing to do, but then it is fun.
My understanding is that you would not have a UK Reg No until the bike gets to the UK
However you should be able to save money by not paying the delivery charge

Yes that's it you get german reg over there and their tax and then have to see dvla to get it all change in this country, trouble is it could be treated as a grey import, hence the dealership involvement to prevent that happening.
What I would do is collect in a van - unregistered but that may not be what you want to do.
