Did he demonstrate that it was non uk spec or simply told you? Is the light slightly pointing towards traffic?

Is the bike an import? seems odd that it would fail with a european headlamp if its been in the country for more than a year ior so. This would be the most obvious item on the bike to either change or modify to make it legal. Do you have a previous MOT certificate for the bike?

Standing in front of the bike Looking at the headlamp glass there's an arrow (should be on the right hand side pointing right for a UK spec headlamp. below the E1 marking)

This is what the glass should look like.

Can you simply change the glass?

it's a while since i had the headlamp out - but I don't believe you can. I seem to remember it being (kinda-ish) one piece with the shell.

If the OP does have a european headlamp then the obvious course it to get a 2nd hander from either motorworks/bins/sherlock. And sell the euro one on ebay - I'm sure there are a few travellers who would love one for euro touring.

Or fix a sticker to alter the light beam. which is what I imagine the mot man meant by a conversion kit.

You will have to buy a complete headlight!! Not cheap for a new one and hard to come by for a second hand one.

Att is right block off the Triangle prism with tape or a beam corrector [as sold in halfords for camper vans etc]

All the vehicles I've imported over the years have passed with either a corrector or a blank off .
90% of all vehicles now have a straight dip position for the bulb, I'll look for a diagram ..
My Hymer has the bulbs in the alternate slots in headlight to give straight dip :) so no probs in UK or on continent:thumb2

Just looked back through the chaps posts (should have done that to start with) and he states that his bike IS an import. so it IS a case of blanking off the lens and keeping eyes peeled for a UK spec headlamp. (these occasionally crop up on ebay)

thanks for all the advice

I know its for an 1150 not an 1100, but the pic below shows how leccy tape was fitted to my euro headlight for it to pass the MOT. It was fitted by friendly garage using their light beam measuring device, and it passed the MOT no probs.

It was good of your friendly garage to do that & ensure that the bike passed, but do you know that the 1150's headlight is capable of being rotated in it's mounts? This makes it simple to make the beam kick up to the left OR the right for UK/Euro use...

Headlight

That is the way to do it, that would appear to be a German light unit and only needs turning to the to align it correctly, when in the UK position the oblong lens is at an angle. Mine was the same but after smashing it brough a new one ouch! and this was A uk pattern and the oblong bit is horizontal for UK use, light spread appears better as well. Just take off the screen and grey panel and loosen the bold at the top of the light unt AND THE SECOND BOLT UNDERNEATH!! and you can turn it against the opposite peg. You will possibly require to tremove the black shroud over the front of the lampe so you can grip the unit to turn it. Don't bother to retighten the bottom bolt (or the top one) as it is a tight fit and if you take it abroad it's easier to change it over.

Apologies Stumac for the thread hijack, entirely unintentional. Interesting response to my post, the garage couldn't get the beam to an acceptable angle for it to pass by turning it, so resorted to tape. I'll play with it come the Autumn when it gets darker again, but for now the tape works.
