Failed Pyramid Plastics R1200GS Hugger

Well the photo pretty much says it all. Might not have been a lot of fun if it had come all the way apart at speed. Was on the bike for about a year.

Does anyone make a hugger for the R1200GS that is worth a hoot?

Just ordered one of those new Wunderlich things that fit under tool tray/behind shocker. Will have it tomorrow hopefully, so will let you know!!

I've already tried the Pyramid hugger, and was quite pleased with its performance in that it kept the shit down, but it rubbed the tyre on both sides - so it went back.

The "hugger" arrived yesterday and I fitted it last night.
Not really a hugger, more of an inner mudguard, it is shaped to fit the profile of the front and sides of the box below the tool tray.
I'm quite impressed with the fit - it's very good, though I'm less impressed with the method of fixing, it's cable tied on.
Having said that, once on it looks like it belongs and feels secure, and the cable ties are not really that noticeable. (no pic's 'cos " bmwbikebits.co.uk " pic's are good enough).
Removal of the standard shock cover is required, but this "inner fender" thing is longer and extends to below the bottom shock mount, so should provide similar or better protection to the shock.
Yet to road test it - but it looks like it could do the job.

I collected my bike from the dealers today after a service, and was handed my pyramid hugger separately. The mechanic had removed it as the plastic had cracked all the way through near the bolts. There's no way that it would have survived the journey home!

I have e-mailed pyramid plastics asking for a replacement, and will let you know their responce.

Fingers crossed for a new one.......
 
I've still got the motorad Concepts one on my bike, it's done around 30,000 miles with only the occaissional rubbing on the very edges of some tyres. Seems to me that there are some fundamental problems with huggers on the GS and although they stop some crap the shock still gets quite a bit as does the riders left leg!

Had your hugger been removed and replaced before?

It sounds like someone (maybe even your dealer) tried to reassemble the hugger without the spacers. I've not got a hugger on my GS, but on my VFR, the hugger had small tubed-shaped washers that the mounting bolts ran through. When tightened, the spacers stopped the bolts from tightening too far and crushing the plastic that the hugger was made from. That sounds like just the sort of damage that you've had.

Have a look at the damage - are the cracks fresh or does it look like it's been there for a while?
 
Zigo - will do! I have been out today, but there is a big shiny round thing in the sky that seems to have dried up all the rain - most unusual, I don't understand?????

It definitely wasn't the dealers, as the service manager and I saw one of the cracks when I arrived, but the extent of the damage wasn't initially apparent. When they took the hugger off to access the rear caliper they saw that the whole thing was completely knackered. The hugger hadn't been removed or refitted before, but has suffered the damage through touching the tyre.

Didn't hear anything back from Pyramid yesterday, apart from an auto-response thanking me for my query, and telling me it would be dealt with asap.

Isn't it strange how some of these small faults can be a real pain in the backside, but they're all forgiven as soon as you ride the bike again!?! I've had a few different problems now, with top-box, gear change, engine cover,
and now this - but they're just irritations and its still the best bike I've ever ridden :D
 
'Cos I don't want to hijack this thread I've started another for the Wunderlich "inner fender". Zigo see that.

I've now had a few contacts with Pyramid Plastics by e-mail and by phone, after the failure of my hugger in the same way as the above photo from Ken H.

I have to say that I feel totally let down by them and their version of customer service. :spitfire

Basically their stance is that because I can't find the invoice they aren't going to help, because "it's probably a fake". What a complete load of bollox this is!!! I told him that the item was most definitely genuine, that it came in BMW packaging, and that I would happily send it to them for inspection before they decided what they would do.

The best offer they could come up with was "a new plastic bit for £94".
 
Ive had the wunderlich/Ilimberger (as they seem to be called in USA) of the 1200 for approx 10 thousand miles..... No problems so far.

They arent cheap (but I got mine 2nd hand (but new) from a fellow GSer....(ta) ... but worth it I think as it keeps the cr*p off my left leg as I ride in all weathers...

I like the look of the mudguard thingy tho

cockneyjanner I have a pyramid hugger if you want it. I don't like it so have removed but it has the 2 screws missing as they are made of cheese. It was on the bike for about 6 months and has a few small marks but is in working order. how about £65. I know this should be in thr for sale section but thought it was kind of relevant to this post.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'm going to steer clear of Pyramid ones after this. I think that there are safety issues with these failures, and the potential to lock the rear wheel or at the very least damage the final drive housing.
I like the look of the Ilmberger carbon ones and will probably opt for one of those.

Why not try a Spraystopper from BestRest Products in the US? It's a neoprene shroud that does the same job as a hugger. It's lighter than a hugger and doesn't resonate to produce that odd sound that some of them do. If you google "BestRest" you'll find their website.
