Has anyone any experience of obtaining family members service records from the MOD at all?

I'm starting to look into my paternal Grandad's service in the Rifle Brigade, particularly in North Africa, but we have very little info within the family (what's left of us) other than his service number and rank.

I'd appreciate any tips or advice please?

I saw my Grandfathers service details. Many regiments, including the rifles have a museum and curator, who keep a lot of the old service records. It is worth getting in touch with the regimental museum to see if they have anything.

Also try the national records office. They can be good, but some of the WW1 records were lost during the blitz. Best part is that it is free so even if its fruitless it hasn't cost you anything

Hi,

If we are talking WWI I might be able help. I have done some digging on two of my great great uncles and am now working through the local war memorial names. I have a subscription for ancestry.co.uk and can download his service records and MIC if they are on there.

If you want some help PM his name and number and I'll have a look.

Sorry, should have said he served in WW2. Family story is that he served in Palestine, where he described Bethlehem as 'too commercial' and was also present at El Alamein.

He died in 1956 at the age of 37.
