Every time I see a comment like, 'The N-260 is the best route in the Pyrenees' I cringe*, there is just so much more here. So it was nice to see something new for 2016: an official guide to some of the best routes in the Pyrenees and someway beyond sponsored by the culture department of Lleida province - under the banner Ara Lleida (Lleida Now, which is a huge tourist information and promotion project) in Catalonia.

The web page - called Moturisme - is geared specifically to bikers and as well as the routes lists accommodation and support services, mechanics, etc. and the project also works behind the scenes to make businesses aware of biker's needs, for example parking, safe storage for clothes, crash helmets, etc. when visiting places of interest, etc. etc.

There are ten point-to-point routes of between 200-250 kms and each one has details of the towns, villages, nature reserves, etc. along the way - accumulating shed loads of 'facts' and general knowledge is a Spanish 'thing' and bikers here are very into this kind of detail as well as the riding itself - and these are very well presented along with a description of the riding and downloadable satnav files for each route.

Although a map is presented with each route on-line you have to view the downloadable guide - which is avalable in good English (thumbs) - for a map showing all of them together. This is useful for putting itineraries together from a combination of routes. However to make the best round trips in the higher Pyrenean passes you have to expand your remit into the neighbouring provinces and over into France.

The on-line listings for services are a bit limited as they are just that, a list, rather than appearing on an interactive on-line map. But a selection of them do appear on the download version. I'm not sure if this selection is based on businesses paying for the privilege or that the designers have tried to ensure that enough information for planning your holiday is there but not so much to make the map unreadable.

I guess that most people would still revert to sites like booking.com anyway but there are plenty of places that are very 'bike friendly' that aren't there, including my own holiday accommodation business, Casa Rafela, which is located pretty much at the centre of all of the routes near Tremp - curiously enough our actuall location on the C1311 isn't included in any of the routes despite that road being one of the best rides in Europe!

OK - "and now a word from our sponsors" Casa Rafela is a lovely two bedroomed cottage in a small village. It has private parking and is a perfect base for exploring and riding in the Pyrenees - and having a great holiday (thumbs) - you can rent it by the week, please!

And now, here's the video - enjoy!

"Never ridden inSpain without getting a ticket for something or other ! Beware "

I've ridden there loads of times and never been stopped, ticketed or spoken to by the cops.
Perhaps you are doing something wrong, besides doing something wrong.
I've done something's that are wrong, but the wrong people never caught me.

Looks good, just wish I could comprende Espanol:D I intend going to Spain later this year with the intention of going to Santiago De Compostella.

Wish we had know about your place for last September. Very well located, in fact sure we stopped in Tremp for refreshments.
Next to the cracking L511 towards Coll de Nargo as well.

SAT NAV FILES

This is superb information, thanks for posting, one issue ive got is the downloads are all google earth.
Anyone tell me how to import them from GE to mapsource please.
Thanks

I reckon all you need is the Michelin maps and as long as you link up the roads with the green outline you can't go wrong.

Mark Shelley, you hit the nail on the head regarding Michelin maps ! (Hope you don't miss your NTX !!).

Thanks for all the kind words guys.

A few points, in no particular order:

It's quite hard to get caught for doing anything wrong in Spain - they even have to advise you of 'hidden' speed traps FFS! As well as the 'Survival/The Law' page on my blog there is the amazing N332, which is a blog owned and run by Guardia Civil traffic cops in their spare time - now with grants to pay for professional translation and legal consultation regarding their advice!

Re. my cottage, well that's a shame, we had a spare week last September too ... check out the web page which has a ling to availability :)

Yo no hablo Español. Yes, actually it was in Catalan and a shame that there wasn't an English version. But in fact that film was geared at people working within the sector rather than the actual punters. A trip to Santiago is fantastic - don't forget to allow time to carry into Galicia - think west coast of Ireland with garlic :) and don't forget to try the lovely white wines form the Rias Baixas - 'ria' is a sort of sea loch.

Sorry about the Google-earth. There is a way to convert but I can't remember how to do it! But the advice about the Michelin maps is sound - IMHO people miss shed loads if they rely solely on satnav. The Green 'Zoom' series are especially good for the Pyrenees as they cover both sides of the border in the ine map - and you just need three for the whole range - also available for the north coast.

Phew, time to go to the dentist ...

What a munchkin - I put the wrong link to my plug on Casa Rafela!

Just to be even, here's Casa Lola that was mentioned earlier - it's a great over night stop and although it's not really necessary they can find a secure parking for bikes.

Not to be missed. Travel through the Spanish national park on the N625 via Riano and on to Leon. Spend a night there.
On to Santigo De Comostella.
Went for 1 night and stayed 5.
Go to the Cathedral. Sit is the same seat Catherine of Aragon sat in just before she left Spain to come to England and marry the heir apparent to the throne, Arthur. Whilst she sat there, they swung the Botafumerio in her honour. The rope broke and it dashed itself to pieces right beside her. If you time it right, you will see it swinging.
On to A Coruna. Go to the grave of John Moore. Take a tram (120 years old)
About 3 weeks should be enough to do the trip badly.

Thanks for posting Simon there's some great information there and totally agree with the N260 comment :D
I've ridden the Pyrenees with a group many times and still feel there is more for me to see and experience, our group did a tour of Spain last year and our destination for our Euro trip this year is as yet undecided, I'll give this some thought and may return to The Pyrenees later this year :thumby:

Nice post Simon, lots of useful info and an alternative to other regions of spain, looks good, many thanks
