Fantastic Bike Friendly Spain: 'official routes in The Pyrenees :)

Simon,

There is a fault with this website, good as it is.

I think that there are meant to be four routes, but two of the routes seem to be duplicated exactly. These are:

(1) Ruta Tierra y Arte

(2)  Ruta “232”

Or at least both shortcuts seem to lead to the single Ruta Tierra y Arte detailed page

I noticed this when i started to convert them, but like a lemon forgot to mention it.

Hmm, I see what you mean - although Google Maps is having a brain fart right now so I can't see all of them yet! - it looks like Ruta 232, which s the distance, is a selection of all of the routes put together. If you plough your way through the text all of the routes follow cultural 'themes' based on features of local architecture*, etc. - as I said in my fist post that's very much a Spanish 'thing', whereas the 232 simply describes the directions. It's a pity that they didn't add a link to download the 232 as that's probably what most foreign riders would want - lets face it, we can do enough brass rubbing at home :)

* for instance the 'Bovedas del Frio' are special building used to make and store ice - they used to fill them with snow in the winter and sell it in summer - often carrying the stuff in mule trains to coastal cities like Valencia - loads-a-money!!!

dropbox is an online storage facility that enables you to store files for yourself or to share with others if you wish, the first couple of gigs are fore free when you sign up, if you require more space there are ways to get more free space, this link gives you a few ways. http://trendblog.net/get-free-dropbox-space/ or you can just upgrade.
hope this helps.

Yep, top man indeed. I have Dropbox but have never really explored its use, but suddenly I have to for a project I'm working on and it's better to admit my ignorance here - amongst friends :)

I'm rather disappointed to find it's a real name.... Cuervo I translated in my mind to 'Curves and bends' which seemed a good name. Always fun doing homemade translations, I find..... usually when faced with a menu! :D

I think the Caminos de Santiago name of the book has only lifted the name from the famous 'Pilgrims way' concept. The routes look fine, I'd certainly ride them on anything from a donkey, a GS to a FireBlade. The book comes with dedicated maps in a nice package. Will I ever ride all or any of them? Some I've done but just scratched the surface. It's nice to have anyway, if only as a pipe dream or bucket list. I collect touring books and maps, which now stretch across Europe, mostly in local languages which is always a laugh. The whole thing has turned into a real industry, with some very good stuff out there.:

Ha ha, a fun pastime that one but perilous when you start learning or speaking the language. I used to do it with cook books, converting the 'universal' Catalan tomato gloop that goes into loads of dishes - good householders make it up weekly in batches - called sofregit as 'so f*** it'. Nowadays when I'm KP to my mates here and they tell me to make/buy/fetch the sofregit while they are sweating away at the stove I always get a fit of the giggles - and can't really explain why now can I!

Love the book collection idea. I'm a map geek - every time I go to Barcelona - a filthy job but by George someone's got to do it - I call by the Altair travel bookshop, which i highly recommend.

My personal fetish if for travel writing rather than travel guides - so much so that i'm starting a book of my own ...

First class info and help from you both. Thank you :thumby:

Ditto Mick. BTW when are you coming down to Spain, I'll make sure to have my brolly to hand! :clap

While I have you experts to hand - can you recommend a route planning software? I can't use Tyre as I'm on Mac but have been trying FURKOT, but that is driving me crazy, or perhaps more crazy!

Without a doubt, BaseCamp.

It works perfectly with a Mac. Trust me, I own one. Match it to a big screen and it's a thing of genius; awesome.

Thanks m8, it was so obvious I never thought about it! Re, the big screen, shame I work on a MacBook :(

Hi Simon

A bit of deja vu, as just pointed someone to Collegats in another post this evening.

Has been a while since both Neil and myself frequented La Pobla (Transit van, Gazebo and 2 KTMs!)

We are hoping for a return visit this September.

Wish we had know about your place for last September. Very well located, in fact sure we stopped in Tremp for refreshments.
Next to the cracking L511 towards Coll de Nargo as well.

Excellent! One of the routes I plotted took us off road from Tremp, but came out on the L-511 to Coll de Nargo. Brilliant road, bend after bend (even on knobblies!), great scenery and nice cafe and refuelling stop in CDN itself.

Can't wait to get back!!

All the best

Hi there, it would be better still if you came to the HISS at Collegats in September (11th - 16th). I'm adding another 200 odd kms of trails for this year, that should take it over 600!

Meanwhile, if any user here contacts me regarding the holiday cottage I'm offering six weeks at 20% discount, that is to save once I have six weeks booked I'll close the offer. Just include your username on the contact form to show that you're a bona fide UKGSer.

You don't even have to come by bike, bring the nearest and dearest, sprogs, dog, etc. for a 'normal' holiday and the deal is the same - the only caveat is that I won't do this deal for groups of bikers, two guys/gals sharing is fine.

THe only thing to be careful in Spain, Pyrenees is the Spanish drivers in the mountains do not know where the centre of the road is. They cut corners regularly and tailgate.

Sad but true. But on the other hand if you took that approach to its extreme you wouldn't get out of bed in the morning ...

PS - I've lived on the amazing C1311 for nearly twenty years now and I'm still alive - amazing isn't it! :)

Just meant as a word of caution and not to be take to its extremes.

No worries at all matey, it is a genuine risk after all, Mrs S was nearly in a head on around a totally blind bend on the C1311 just last Sunday, nearly went totally, as opposed to only partially, into a ditch while the other driver nearly swerved over the edge. I caught up with her ten minutes later in the truck and she was still shaking - not like her at all with her LGV training!

Luckily our dog was asleep on the floor in the back of the kangoo - you wouldn't want 40 kgs of Alaskan Malamute hitting you on the back of your head would you!

PS - shame about missing each other at the Tremp Fira - call in on the XTremp Moto stall and give my regards to David and Enric! :)

PPS - I didn't notice where you live when I made my original reply, you've got quite a trip down just for a pack on Nº 6 haven't you!
