Fast idling

Help required please. My 1150 (2000) has decided to start idling at about 1250 revs. Not doing anything else unusual. I have checked the cables on the throttle and choke and both seem ok and free movement. could this be caused by the rubber covers being missing off the vacuum bores? I found one (the rubber thingy) that seems to have fallen off and the other one is missing also. And yes I did do a search but that which isnt dutch is double dutch. and what the hell is a Hall sensor anyway?

It certainly wont be helping. Always worth starting with the obvious problems first... and thats an obvious one.


Get some new ones for a start. They dont "have" to be bmw ones. Just pop into a local breakers and they will have what you need. I recently fitted some i had left over from a zx9r onto mine as mine had perished and cracked.

Go to diesel specialist ask for the blanking plug for the end injector spill off
cheap as chips

Missing vac blanks definitely won't help - you're bleeding extra air into the intake which will lean out the mixture (or possibly the motronic will increase fuelling to compensate - not sure if it'll do this without the TPS changing position?) either way = increased idle speed.

Replace the vac blanks and I'd imagine you'll be back to normal.

Put your finger over the end of the brass bits see if it makes a difference quick test.

Obviously replaces the vacuum take of covers/bungs and see what that does before going any further.

I’d forget the hall sensors, they control fuel injection and ignition timing, I very much doubt that’s your problem.

thanks for the help guys. Hadnt covered the vacuum bores as I only found one rubber (perished) and figured if the other one had been missing for some time, that one wasnt likely to make a difference. Good tip on the diesel thing.

Just to finish out this thread. Got the bike warmed up today and covered the vacuum bores, Idle speed reduced so problem identified. Tried a breakers and several Factors without finding a replacement so it looks like off to my BMW dealers at next oportunity.

Glad you got it sorted.

Motorworks (see links at the top of every page) sell the bungs - I bought a couple for mine last week - cost pennies.

Or as Steppers says - temporarily, just tape them up
