Fat Cow will be missed...

When I was at Bahnstormer just before Christmas, there was a Belgian dealer picking up 3 bikes in a pickup truck. The way they were wedged in, made me wince, along with the rear tyres almost rubbing the wheel arches.

Apparently he’s a regular customer and buys bikes from dealers all the time.
Mine was one of them and I got right royally spanked!

Trouble is, as a society we all like things to be easy. Because Inherently we are lazy.

As some in here have and would suggest:
save yourself hassle, trade it in, loose more value in the bike than it is actually worth, because dealer will pull figure for your bike out the blue, screw you over by pulling wool over your eyes and tell you that the deal on the table is the best one you’ll find and there is only one bike that he’s got in that specification, get back to having new bike, another PCP, £5-£7 to change, etc. EASY, all in a matter of couple of hours, while sat comfortably sipping “free” coffee.

Now my principal is, sell the bike privately, yes it is headache, takes ages to find a buyer and so on, but I always came out with more value from it. I then go to the dealer with nothing to spoil the deal.

However, I must remind myself to keep the flipping thing and enjoy it for much longer than 22 month.

Two of my friends have GSA's. One on a 14 plate, and one on a 17 plate. Both were really looking forward to upgrading to the new R1250.

BUT, dealers were offering them such low PX Values plus £7,000 to £10,000 cost to change... neither have done a deal.

We're all keeping our bikes. Upgrading suspension mainly, and staying put.

The form factor of the GSA is what we want, not prepared to pay nearly £10,000 to update it, it's crazy.

All our bikes are below 30,000 miles and should keep us going for years to come. All are now investing in tools to DIY Service them as well. :thumb

Fuck the BMW cash cow system :D

All is fine, but what if it will need connecting to a mothership?

I've got an OBDLink-MX with Motoscan App. So I've already used it for Service Resets, TPMS sensor setting, Fault Code Reading.... and it can do more.

My mates '14 reg GSA has an OBD2 adapter link and we've successfully reset his service indicator and checked for fault codes.

Anything major... take it in to BMW.

I must have been lucky. Picked up my 2016 GSA-TE with all the toys and a few more thrown in (plus full luggage) for £12K in excellent condition from a UK dealer. To get 3K more for selling a similar bike with the same miles and age is an insanely good result!

It is when you think a 2017 TB was only £15,800 new !!

So to get £15,000 for it 18 months later is unbelievable in normal circumstances...

I wonder if they're using these bikes commercially for Biker Adventure Holidays or off-road schools??

Interesting! I was offered quite reasonable money for my F800GS in PX. I mean I could have got more private but the PX was good enough for me to avoide dealing with nit wits on eBAY.

I think the F800’s are a touch more desirable as most dealers have less and sell less of the middleweights. The problem with a 1200GS/GSA is that there are so many of them, dealers are less keen to take one in part ex, especially during a quiet time of the year. A
Couple of years ago I bought an 800GSA and the only reason the dealer took a part ex was by selling it straight into a dealer. Otherwise they weren’t accepting any part-ex’es as they had a while forecourt of used bikes.

Unfortunately, the shocking second hand private market for BMWs is a nasty by-product of the PCP system.

This, and it's not just BMWs. Folk who can't afford second hand stuff can get new under these schemes - there just has to be a down side to that.

Yep

this. The advent of PCP being the "normal" way to fund a new BMW is what's driving used prices down because no-one (very few anyway) are buying their bikes after their 2,3 or 4 year plan matures. They're simply handing them back for a new one because when you work out depreciation on a new bike over the same timeframe, it's not costing them a lot more.

Trouble is, for those of us who do buy and run bikes for a fair few years, we're offered next to nothing in part-ex because the market's swamped.

If you think Beemer prices are low, just look at what one or two year old Triumph Tiger 1200's are going for. I sold my four year old Tiger Explorer (top of the range with every conceivable extra fitted and then some) px, which was mint for the age, and got way less than half new cost (I was offered just £6500 compared with £14,800 new price back in 2014)). It was on the forecourt a week later for £8K. Try picking up a 3 or 4yr old GSA with low miles, in mint condition for 8K fully loaded....despite the market, BMW GSA's and GS's still command better than average prices I think. It's the part ex deals which are below par generally.

Private sales are easy
Sold a bike this morning that I wasn't looking to sell
Bloke nattered me
I told him a price which was 16 % more than I paid for it 8 months ago
Bike has cost nowt to run in that time barring fuel/tax as all consumables were New when I bought it
So I have 500 miles and 6 days off-road riding for nowt and I am 16% up
Sometimes it's the right time to sell, when you have a keen buyer
