Faulty Fuel Gauge

My last 1200 gs adv suffered from a faulty fuel gauge. Often the warning light coming on, no "bars" on the gauge and just the range showing. After a while it would reset itself. Despite the bike going back in for various warranty bits the problem was never solved! Whats new I hear you ask?

I took delivery of a 2010 Adv and guess what the same has started happening to this bike. has any one else suffered the same problem with the Mk 3 (2010) Adv. Is it too much to expect a working fuel gauge on such a bike. To say I'm a little miffed is an understatement!

Why should BMW be any different to any other manufacturer? Its part of the fun ye knaa, the unknown, don't trust them anyways

My 1200GS is the third bike to have a gauge (XJR1300 & 1150RT previous) but there all a best guess in my brief experience.

Best running out situation was on the XJR, filled up, bimbled along for 100 miles or so, fuel gauge needle at 3/4, filled up again as I was needing the bike the next day.

Next day bimbling along, checked fuel gauge, was at 3/4 looked again a bit later still at 3/4, looked at the Odo, 160miles or so, stopped the bike and tapped the gauge, then again, then again. slowly the needle dropped to bugger nearly empty.

Doubled back to the nearest petrol station back some 30 odd miles.

I got within 2 miles before I ran out, but as the XJR had a reserve tap (remember them?) nil desperandum, well until I realised it was already on reserve after a previous near miss and I forgot to turn it back

Its great pushing a heavy bike 2 miles to the petrol station on a hot sunny day

Take it back quote "Sale of Goods Act 1979" and demand the gauge works as it should or ask for a refund/new bike the choice of which is yours.

If they refuse, contact your local cunsumer direct/trading standards office who will give you advice and deal with the seller on your behalf.

If the bike is on finance contact your fiannce company (incl credit cards) for they will also be liable, all at no cost to you

BMW need to get to grips with their piss poor build quaility.

Hi I have just had my fuel level sensor done at Clarks. The bike is out of warranty but I only had to pay for the labour. BM provide the part as they know they problems with this part. Give Chris a call at Clarks it’s not that far from you and he will sort it.

BMW do seem to be developing a reasonable system into a crap one. My old GS had a simple gauge that jumped from full to half and then dropped bar at a time until the low fuel light flashed. In 40000 miles it never let me down.

My new GSA is now on its third gauge. In theory it is better, the bars drop one at a time and the display shows estimated remaining mileage. In practice its a joke. On mine the bars can go from almost empty to almost full while riding and the remaining distance has gone up from 100 to 250 while the miles per gallon stays the same.

I have also seen the bike show a low fuel warning with an estimated 180 miles remaining!!

Not sure if the third gauge is any better. Pothole plus bend means bike is in SLM waiting to be fixed!
