Bought a GS recently and it only managed 170 miles before reading 0 miles on the range finder. I'd fill it up but it'd only take 14.5-15 litres max (on centre stand).

Sent it back to BMW and they said it missed a recall for a faulty sensor or something, changed the part but its still only taking 14.5-15l on the last two tanks and doing 170 miles again.

Clearly this isn't right but is this a common problem?

Only a problem if you see it as such! It gives you another warning that the fuel is getting to the point there a fill up is a good idea. It's consistent and therefore reliable. There is plenty in life to stress about, count yourself lucky if this is all you've got. Improbable as it sounds we all managed without such gizmos. Just enjoy the bike.

Mine (1200RT) has a faulty gauge, it reads wrong as a lot do, and it's not consistent ether leading me to run out 3 times now. Only use the trip mileometer now. If you can get your dealer to replace it do so, it's under a 2 year guarantee then I believe, and that could be useful.

Don't let the dealer say it's unusual, it's very common indeed.

206 quid, had mine done at alan jefferies a few months ago ,takes about two hours or so:thumb

I've just re-calibrated mine using a GS911 - hopefully it will stay accurate for a while, but as with the car, still only trust the trip.

Thanks for the responses. I always used to use the trip on my 600rr so I've no problem with that, my issue is it wasn't fixed the first time under warranty and why should I live with a faulty one. I'll give them another shout tomorrow

Did you buy it from a BMW dealer? The fuel strip must be calibrated to your bike when its first fitted and you need either the BMW Diagnostic system to do that or a GS911.

No, it was from Fowlers in Bristol but as they don't do BMW servicing, they sent it to Bristol Motorrad who changed the fuel level sensor

My 2010 gs was exactly the same nothing to worry about at least you now know what the fuel consumption is so just use the trip meter. ..sorted

I would hope that within that process the fuel strip got calibrated, but there seems a possibility that it wasn't. If the gauge is working (albeit inaccurately) then I would suspect its not been done for some reason. The new part would have a two year warranty - assuming thats what they actually did.
