FD bearing gone in Morocco, any contacts?

Update. Would be great to know, but unbelievably Jack has found a near new (7000kms!) FD in Marrakech on a 97 GS. Hopefully we will be able to sort this soon and not have to push a broken bike on to the ferry to Barcelona.

Quick update. We have beer!!!

Oh, and at 1.15 this morning (!) the mechanic and a replacement FD arrived from Casablanca, 300kms away, not Marrakech as previously advised.

He swapped the units in no time while we looked on, holding a torch and freezing our arses off .

This morning I checked it over and found too much play in the Paralever bearing, but that was quickly fixed. We are rolling again thanks to the great Moroccan people and the ADV biking community.

Thanks everyone, especially Jack Kemp!

Great news, it’d probably have taken longer and cost more to get it fixed at home. Very well done to all concerned. 👍🏻

This could have been a lot more tricky if it had happened out in the sticks. Fortunately we were able to limp in a mile to town to a good hotel with an owner who was super helpful and spoke excellent English. He stayed up to translate with the mechanic!

Should I have changed the bearing (and the fuel pump that crapped out in Montenegro) before we set off?. Maybe because this was mostly a Euro trip I was complacent. The bearing was not that high mileage - I changed it once myself, and it may have been done again after another repair to the input bearing, not sure. Am I imagining the gearbox is a tiny bit graunchy now? I changed to a Motul oil with moly in rather than the usual Silkolene last service.

Either way, I think me and the bike gonna spend some quality time together in the garage this winter...
