Afternoon gents
should I now be panicking? as the FD has just started misting oil out and has a some play like a duff wheel bearing?
What checks should I be doing to find out what's going on?
Gs1200 2004 25K mostly on road but does go green laning in summer months
Cheers for any pointers
Duncan

If the play is anymore than 1mm at the rim then the bearing has gone. Otherwise you might just need a new seal.

Cheers Marki
think I'll do the oil at the weekend & see what it looks like?

Can you just get the bearings done?

Yes you can. If yours has never been touched at a 2004 there is an upgraded pinion bearing to go in as well. There is a guy on here that does FD rebuilds but I can't remember his name. Someone will be along shorty no doubt to say who it is.

If the oil's fine when you drop it out (no metal fragments) you just need a new seal, the seal on my old SC went and looked a lot worse than that.

If you spin the wheel as fast as you can with one hand, having your other hand on the bevel drive - if you can feel a rumble the bearings gone. Similar if you grip the wheel at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and the wheel rocks sideways more than 1mm (at the rim) its probably knackered.

mikeyboy FD expert :thumby:

He most certainley is:thumb . To the OP, I would think that if yours is an 04 and hasn't had any FD work, it would be well worth having a total rebuild which will see you with no issues for a very long time.

Just note that the wheel side bearing is the one that normally goes and that it does not run in the final drive oil.
So oil condition is not always an indicator. I have pulled out wheel side bearings full of rust and the FD oil looked perfect.

Patzx12 posted a FD strip-down thread with pictures. The pinion nose bearing on older FDs seems to suffer badly. If that breaks up the whole drive will be toast. Mikey's charges are very reasonable even with delivery each way - just get it over to him and have the whole lot rebuilt with new bearings and properly shimmed to suit.
