Just a question, have you ever used any anti-friction liquid or compound products like Super Dynamic, Motor-Kote and/or Molykote in addition to the FD oil?

In case you used Molykote, please specify grade or number.

I'm very cynical and sceptical about additional additives. Most oils come with an additive package the result of a great deal of research and experience. I seriously doubt additional additives will improve things over what major oil companies have achieved with feedback from vehicle manufacturers and hauliers etc. Snake Oil I reckon. I can't think of a single vehicle manufacturer that recommends separate additives.

guzzi specify moly additive for their old bevel boxes. probably makes no difference, and i wouldn't use it in anything else.

on the other hand, they have a way lower failure rate than bmw FDs :augie

Ok point taken and Honda specify greasing the bevel in Pans with very high moly content grease whenever the wheel's off. I was thinking more of the stuff in Halfords that apparently halve the wear rate and make your engine more powerful blah, blah, blah. Still can't see why BMW would ignore them if they believed they helped. Surely they don't believe that increased parts sales counters reliability on a machine designed for "Adventure" use?

I think the rule of thumb when it comes to adding anything to either the oil or fuel is that if it was worth it in the first place then the refineries would put it in themselves.

Well up to a point, but for example we wouldn't be daft enough to put the fancy Castrol final drive oil in a 30 year old landrover diff as it would be worth more than the entire landrover itself. Oil is horses for courses with pricing and performance to match. We all hope that the stuff specified for the FD is the best there is for the job, god knows the FD needs all the help it can get, but we don't know for sure (do we??) that there's isn't something better out there or there exists an additive that geniunely could improve it a little. Until someone does an experiment using a different oil or additive, or a handy oil specialist happens to read this, we're all simply guessing.
