Anyone know anybody who will have a go at a 12FD rebuild? The bearings seem ridiculously cheap compared to buying a new unit. I'm quite happy to be the guinea pig for an engineering company who want to have a go at learning the job.

Spotted the reply in the 11** section Mav, you`ll have to keep us posted with how you get on :thumb2 Could be a good little earner for whoever does it.

if it's a 1200GS I have an FD bought in error for my mates bike it's off an 08 GS (with a scratch did circa 1800 miles and insurance replaced it due to scratch)
"Hurts" say that it is totally incompatable with an 04 bike as is the ABS sensor is different and the operation won't tie in with an 04 Cental Electric Unit?????????

I don't know if I can detect the scent Muck spreading locally but I ain't in a postion to say Yeah or Nay to whatthey sayin!!

Whoever "Hurts" are - sounds right to me. The '08 model year has the Continental Teves ABS system and the pre '07 models had the FTE (servo) system.

There is a chap (on this site) trying to do just this and finding incompatibility problems.

I have a 06 1200GSA, and had the final drive replaced in January for the new FD with the drain plug on the bottom, there is no differnce. Also would not make any difference about the brakes because the ABS/Speed sensor is exactly the same set up.:nenau

I'm cautious about this as only a dealer can give the informed answer but:

For example, if you note the teeth in the front disc of the servo ABS system you will see that they are different to the later model. :nenau

Do you know if the ABS ring in your replacement FD is the same as in the '08 model FD ? The drain plug position doesn't quarantee that.

The ratios are different as well and the sensors have different part numbers from 08/2006 :nenau

Well folks I am the guy that Jaythro is referring to regarding the 2008 FD fitting onto my 04 GS.....
As stated I aquired a 2008 FD & fitted it to my 04 GS, perfect fit....only one problem no ABS or Speedo!
Tried fitting 04 loom c/w ABS sensor to 08 FD but completely different sensor, wouldn't fit into the FD at all...
Straight to local BMW dealer who tried all sorts of fixes to get my bike to read the 08 ABS sensor even tried an 05 ABS sensor with no luck. Local BMW Services manager contacted BMW UK Technical & they confirmed that the 08 ABS sensor was entirely different from the 04 model & most definately wouldn't be compatible with my 04 bike!
It transpires BMW made an upgraded FD in 2005 which fits 04 - 06 models, with drain plug & upgraded bevil.
Ended up having to buy & fit the new 05 FD (with new 2 year warranty) off local dealer to get my bike back on the road, with the help of a partial good will gesture from BMW Uk!
Bike well out of warranty but only 20,450 miles on clock & kept in mint condition.
A very costly, frustrating & time consuming fix....
£275 for the 08 FD I bought, £518 for the new 05 FD which didn't include the £365 partial good will gesture from BMW UK.
Had also originally bought a second hand wheel carrier at £50 when 04 FD had gone wonky but didn't solve the problem obviously!
£843 in total to get bike back on the road & that was with discount & the help of a very good BMW crazy friend.
A new FD with BMW fitting (because they won't sell them to customers over the counter) will cost you in excess of £900 plus.
I am selling my 2008 FD for the price I payed for it if anyone interested, always good to have as a spare incase you happen to be one of the unlucky FD victims!
£275 plus P&P....roughly £18.50 which includes postal insurance. Absolute Bargain! Hope this clears up your ABS compatibility debate as far as BMW UK technical are concerened.
If anyone else can prove this wrong by reworking an FD then happy days, you should be working for BMW UK :thumb

I'm glad you've got to the bottom of this - somewhat expensively. Don't forget the oil in the new FD should be changed at 600 miles - more expense, unless you do it yourself (easy).:thumb

Already changed the oil in the 08 FD when I bought it just incase it had been drained before posting.....syringe kit saves a lot of unnecessary time & effort, pretty straight forward indeed.
My only problem now is I may have to take the bike back to local dealer to change the new FD oil at 600 miles as I may invalidate the 2 year warranty that came with fitting.
Sometimes your just caught between the devil & the deep blue sea Bah Humbug :aidan
