fd refurb

after 12007 mls my fd has failed on my 08 gsa, i know there are a few engineers on this site who will recon the unit but does any of them improve the unit ie fitting a drain plug for easier maintenance? can or is it possible to retro fit a breather as on the latest fd units? are the bearings the same as the originals or better quality?

three of the the four bearings are bmw part only so i would guess that they are of the same quality as the originals,regarding retro fitting a drain point it only takes ten mins to drain and refill any way so no point really.on the breather side of things the later ones dont seem to be any better than the earlier ones so again is there anything to be gained.when you say your fd has failed what is wrong with it?is it play in the wheel ?or has the pinion bearing collapsed?if the fd has not suffered from a big failure i can refurb all new bearings and seals £320, or £360 ride in ride out, my workshop is in trowell ,notts.07786 340692.mike

I have a similar problem with wheel bearings, 6-12 o clock slight movement.I am having the bearing replaced but can't get it done for a couple of weeks. Anyone know if it's dangerous to use the bike with this bearing problem????

I have an 07 and I have slight play at 6&12 but only when It's warm. Also I get a squeaking sound that sounds like a rubber seal again when warm. And finally I get a distinctive wow wow sounds over 40 that is linked to road speed. Thought it was s tyre but changed tyre to different type but still there. BMW say its fine and have seen a lot worse. Any ideas what this could be?

Mine has slight play, can be felt rather than seen, but it disappears when hot.

surely no play is exceptable, doing 100mph with any play in the rear wheel is a scary thought?

that will be the main crown wheel bearing,it can be changed on its own,if every thing else is ok but i would do them all,easy for me to say i know,but these fd,s seem to be giving people a bit of paranoia.mike

some seem to have a bit off play and it causes no prob,a mate of mine rode around for ages with one like that ,BUT,once you know you have a problem,it plays on your mind.mike

Very true mate, to be honest I am well pi**ed off with this. Bloody bike supposed to be hard core and all that b**locks, dealers can't sort it out till after the Bank Holiday, so the things just sitting in the garage and has cocked up my weekend well and truely.
I was really up to changing this for a new model, dealers are all over you like a rash to sell you a new one, but they ain't all that keen to help you out when you are in the sh*t.
I have to say, frustrated ain't the word,

mikey ill be in touch over the next week or so, how long do you need the bike on the ride in/out? and your right, its best to change the lot while its in pieces, sounds like your goin to be busy over the winter!

just checked the fd unit now its cold and theres no play at all! i checked it last night after a 80 mile ride back from cadwell and there was significant play, it felt as rough as a dogs arse

i had the exact same wow wow noise at forty mph too,i really could not put up with it.nothing the dealer did could cure it.they eventually changed the bike for me.
btw the wow wow noise is nothing to do with the fd.

I changed to EXPs on the rear from standard Tourances. So what is the wowo wow noise attributed to

the dealer did not know,had the bike a week and could not fix it,i suspected they were going to say they all do that sir,but to their credit they agreed that it was very noticable and gave me a new bike (the old one was ex demo).as far as i know they later retailed the bike to some one else who i assume must have been deaf.

08 FD should have a drain plug as standard.

this wow wow thing...is it a wheel speed related thing that you can hear with the clutch pulled in? 'cos my 11 bike does it to some extent. above about 45, lost by 60ish.

actually, it's less wow wow, more a slight oscillation. i thought it might be the tyres, but can't be sure.

I put it down to tyres on mine as it changed when I changed my tyres. Big chunky tyres create a lot of road noise. Probably doesn't happen with full road tyres.

my wow wow was speed related started at about 30 and got loudest at about 45 mph at about 4000 rpm,clutch out and gentle throttle.it was really strange,mind you the gearbox bearings went on that bike the week before,it had a brand new gearbox and it was assumed by the dealer that it would cure the wow wow,but no no.
