If you haven't tried opening the original file, then don't, not yet. There is a tempory file in which Word stores the changes you make to the original until you 'Save' the original file. Even if you have tried opening the original file already, the temporary file may still be there.
Go to the folder where the original is saved and check to see if there is another, hidden, copy of the file, it will have the same name as the original file but the first two letters may be different (e.g. ~$ in my version of Word 2010). As I mentioned, it will be hidden so you may need to select the "View Hidden Files" option for that folder (i.e. Folder tool bar: select Tools, View Folder Option, View, select 'Show hidden files and folders').
If it exists, make a copy of this file elsewhere.
Next, try opening the original Word document, you may be lucky and it may tell you there is more up to date version of the file that has not been saved, and there will be an option to retrieve it. If there is, retrieve it and check all is there, then save it with the original file name. If successful you can delete the copy of the tempory file you made.
If you do not get the option to retrieve the file, then open the copy of the temporary file you made and see if this contains all your work. If it does then save it with the original file name, you can then delete the copy of the temporary file if you wish.
If not, then I don't know what else to suggest, but hope you get it all back.
