And I've spent all feckin' day writing a word document (as it happens .. a ride report for here )

So ... the original word doc that I started a few days ago is still here, but everything i've added today and tonight is not.

Is it retrievable or has it gone for good?!

(I should have periodically hit the save button .... :blast)

Check if you have the Auto Recover feature enabled in Word........http://www.extendoffice.com/documents/Word/887-word-Auto-Recover-file-location.html#a1

If not enable it for next time, Auto Save too. http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/w...our-files-in-case-of-a-crash-HP010354296.aspx :rob

If you haven't tried opening the original file, then don't, not yet. There is a tempory file in which Word stores the changes you make to the original until you 'Save' the original file. Even if you have tried opening the original file already, the temporary file may still be there.

Go to the folder where the original is saved and check to see if there is another, hidden, copy of the file, it will have the same name as the original file but the first two letters may be different (e.g. ~$ in my version of Word 2010). As I mentioned, it will be hidden so you may need to select the "View Hidden Files" option for that folder (i.e. Folder tool bar: select Tools, View Folder Option, View, select 'Show hidden files and folders').

If it exists, make a copy of this file elsewhere.

Next, try opening the original Word document, you may be lucky and it may tell you there is more up to date version of the file that has not been saved, and there will be an option to retrieve it. If there is, retrieve it and check all is there, then save it with the original file name. If successful you can delete the copy of the tempory file you made.

If you do not get the option to retrieve the file, then open the copy of the temporary file you made and see if this contains all your work. If it does then save it with the original file name, you can then delete the copy of the temporary file if you wish.

If not, then I don't know what else to suggest, but hope you get it all back.

Maybe search your hard drive c? for a word you used in document to see if it will pick it up , as said might be there somewhere as a temp file.

What windows operating system are you on (control/alt/delete). That might give you a clue where word puts its temp files.

Thanks blokes for replying .. I'll try looking again and let yer know ..!!

.......edit ... it's windows 7 Sirich ....

Depending on which version of Word you have. Go into Word and Recent and have a look at the bottom of the page for a "Recover unsaved documents" button.

I've never seen that option before! Could be very useful.
