supermarket juice is the lowest of the low , my diesel did about 150 mile more / tank using shell top diesel than supermarket crap and I said to the attendant that was the case and she said years ago its cheap crap that they sell and I agree!!!!!

years ago me and my mate him on kawa zxr1100 and me on bmw r1100rsse he said one day after using shell that my bike seemed fast and I agreed so there you have we both said the same , all the none believers use E10 and knacker there engines up and us that afford super unleaded will be saying I told ____--___--__

waffle waffle . unleaded for a start uses ethanol which is lest potent than petrol which results in less emissions and power , I take a stab at this guess you have a gsa with low suspension or a rs with a tank bag .

in the last month or so ESSO moved to 99 octane....

so you have more chance to get one that makes a difference

I put Esso supreme 99 in this morning before heading off to Stratford upon Avon. The bike really does like it.

According to my handbook, its the required type

(which is rather odd, given that the bike is supposed to go anywhere in the world. and Super certainly isnt available everywhere.)

marketing gumpf prehaps ??

can you check?

coz I have the manual for mine, an 1200 LC, I downloaded the 1250LC one the other day, and a twin cam manual, all say use 95, NO mention at all of 98 or higher on these models

I have a MY16, and the handbook is as clear as mud

It recommends super unleaded and then says 95 Ron

Which is confusing, as super unleaded is 99 Ron and premium is 97 Ron

Boggo std unleaded is 95 Ron

It then says if you want to run 91 Ron you need a software flash (remap)

I Just stick super in, at 15 - 18L a go the price is bearable

you are confusing matters by assigning definitions that are wrong - assuming you are referring to the UK, super unleaded has to be at least 97 RON. Fuel sold as premium unleaded is bog standard unleaded at 95 RON. Some branded premium fuels such as Tesco Momentum claim 99 RON. Shell V Power claims to be 4% superior fuel but does not claim a particular RON. It has dynaflex whatever the fuck that might be. Note, these premium fuels do not claim to be super unleaded as I guess they do not want to be associated with the 97 RON super stuff sold by Sainsbury's.

Anyway, keep buying the posh petrol. It's not likely to be any better for the GS but it will make you feel better and redistribute more of your money to HMRC.

Didn't know that the Ron levels varied from country to country,

Thought thats why they used the Ron number to ensure consistency

so it's super where available and premium where not

I'm sticking to Super, the only reason being when i used it on the hexhead it was a lot quieter

Although i dont think the odd £1 extra that the treasury gets is going to be a game changer :)

There are 3 different measures for octane levels in fuel. Europe uses RON, so 95 is standard unleaded everywhere (and E95 is in a lot of places where 10% ethanol is allowed).

There is another measure called MON. The MON for standard unleaded is 87

The Americans have their own, the AKI, which is the average of RON + MON, so 91 AKI is 95 RON

Hence, on a forum like this which has a global following, state your units.

oddly enough all of my BM's have always run better on the cheapest 95 RON available on the Continent

my S1000XR makes more bangs on the over-run using the E10 stuff in France - rather nice in an Alpine tunnel :)

So if the octane rating makes no difference to power output,as a few people are suggesting,if I add a measure of paraffin to my fuel, hence lowering the rating,(very crudely, sic),the power output will not drop?
Why was 'pool petrol',(I think that was the name used),discontinued after the war if its lower octane level gave the same performance as normal fuel?
Put a bike on the dyno and record the difference,it DOES exist!

DO NOT ADD PARAFFIN/KEROSENE TO YOUR PETROL. A few years ago fuel gangs were adding 10% to petrol in a scam known as fuel stretching. Ruined many engines. JJH

My Hexhead R1200GSA runs much better on Super Unleaded, feels smoother and picks up cleaner, and gets 10% better mileage per gallon so is cost neutral. It doesn’t seem to make any difference to my mates WCs, 1200 & 1250.
