I recently posted in the 12's, about the new oil that's going to be put into my bike and wondered if the LC's had started with the 15W

Have any of you heard about a oil change ?

My bike (not a 12) was in for a Service Saturday and my oil is Castrol power 1, 10W 40

But I here, from the main dealership service desk its changing to 15W 40 (I'm sure it's still 40 not 50, definitely going to 15) when and why ?

Do you know is it the same for the 12GS or the superior Wasserhead ?

From the Owners Manual:-

"Castrol Power 1 Racing SAE 5W-40, API SL / JASO MA2"



BUT, on my 600ml sevice, I've been invoiced for Power 1 15w-50

Hi, have had the same query on this subject, my lc went in aj for first service ,and was told that the bike now has castrol power 1 4t 15w-50,semi synthetic not as the drivers manual states castrol power 1 racing 4t 5w-40 fully synthetic ,but checked with another dealer and they said castrol power 1 racing 4t 5w-40 fully synthetic .
e mailed BMW and Castrol and waiting for reply ,

Some one's got their wires crossed. BMW now only list 2 engine oils now.
Castrol Power 1 5/40 full synthetic - to be used in R1200GS/LC ,S series and K series (Not the old K1200's)
Everything else 15/50 Castrol Power 1 semi synthetic

Can i use Castrol Power 1 Racing 10w-50 instead of 5w-40 for my GS LC? as it gets super hot here, we rarely see below 15 and gets hot as hell at 45 deg in the summers.

Likely it would make sod all difference and personally I would not hesitate . But thenI doubt that such tiny changes are more about whats available on what deal at what price than they are about engineers thingink that 10w is too thick or 5w is too thin.

In any case the running temperature is likely to be the same and controlled by the thermostat.

I bet the only reason for the change is that tight wads like me used to get the old Mobil oil for about £22 for 5 litres from Halfords rather than pay £58 for 4 litres from the stealers. Now you have to get the Castrol product via the dealers as I cannot find it anywhere else.

NO, what im telling you is that they have moved away from an easily sourced product which is readily available at many places to an oil which is not so readily available to the general public. Therefore they are artificially keeping up the profit margin of BMW dealers service dept.
Further more, yes I have bollocks, I do not smoke and am not a dude.
You may like to try communicating in a language that the over 18's use.

Try searching for the power 1 4t both in 5w40 and 10w50 and neither are commonly stocked, Opie Oils plus a few other places that will order it in, appears the Castrol link is being worked by BMW so that people are forced to pay more by buying from a dealer.If you check on Castrol's website they are not listed unless you search on the specific viscosity
Opie oils do 4 litres for £40 . .whereas a bm dealer is looking at £18 a litre, last service I got hit for £78 for oils, a mate in the trade quoted me £52 for both engine and final drive oils. Even he had to ring the Castrol rep for prices as they were not in his dealers catalogue

Sir is much too cynical. Having a good friend who used to head up Castrol's motorcycle division, I can confirm that Castrol does develop oils specially for various vehicle manufacturers one of which is BMW. The engine dynos at Castrol HQ at Sunbury-on-Thames run engines for extended periods to develop oils of the appropriate specification and performance.

To cite another example, VAG TDI oils, ie 505.00, 505.01, 507.00 et al were developed by Castrol specifically meet the requirements of those engines. Oils to these specs were, initially, only available from Castrol and subsequently have been produced by other oil manufacturers.

Hmmm. Sunbury is where BP is based, owner of Castrol. Castrol HQ is in Swindon. There are no engine dyno's in Sunbury. From someone who used to work at BP.
