Just a heads up.

Have any of you heard about a oil change ?

My bike (not a 12) was in for a Service Saturday and my oil is Castrol power 1, 10W 40

But I here, from the main dealership service desk its changing to 15W 40 (I'm sure it's still 40 not 50, definitely going to 15) when and why ?

Do you know is it the same for the 12GS or the superior Wasserhead ?

You can use whatever is recommended in the manual without affecting the warranty. You can specify that the dealer uses a different oil. I did on my 1200, as the fully synthetic made the engine "knock like a bastard" on start up. So they used semi synth.

The independent mechanic I use, uses 10w40 semi synth.

It is now Castrol power 1 15/50 semi synthetic that BMW recommend for all boxers and parallel twins. Came into play a month or two ago. Apparently the fully synthetic wasn't allowing engines to bed in properly. No shit Sherlock!
Had my 6k done last week and they used Castrol 15/50 semi. Suits me as I never liked the idea of fully synth in my bike. It's cheaper too.

I see Acteveo 20W50 is still OK on the BMW Motorrad website, as "proven protection".

Been using it for years & as I have a couple of older bikes that also use 20W50, makes sense for me.

Just changed my oil today. I used Castrol GTX 10w-40 semi synth for high mileage motors.. although mine is only at 19k miles. The oil is for car engines but according to the Castrol guy on the oil sticky he rates it highly for boxer rotavator engines:D, so thats good enough for me! Cost 35€ for 5L but they are doing a deal with a top up 2L bottle Free (since nothing is ever free it costs 5€ per L)

BMW change their oil spec more often than a whore changes her knickers:rolleyes:

I use Putoline 20/50 V twin semi synthetic in mine which suits the bike well:thumb2

I put putoline 10/40 in my tls last month, been using it for ever, done 64,000 miles now on it, £24,00 for 4 litres, had the GSA serviced last week and they charged me £58,50 for 3 litres of castrol power , go figure :blast

I didn't think whores wore any knickers to save time between customers?

I hate oil threads but this time I have a question:- I now lay the 1200 (just done 40K) up for the winter Oct to Apr, after a couple of rides in Apr the oil seems to disappear from the sight glass :nenau Is this normal bike bedding back in or sign of problems, have now given her an oil change now and all is well.

I'd change the oil prior to laying it up so it doesn't have any of the nasty acidic by-products of combustion rotting it through the winter.

Different viscosity as we go into summer maybe?

No; been on their list for a long as I can remember. Certainly in my old Force the job bikes, which had a pretty "challenging" life, always ran on Castrol 20W50.
I can't say that I ever saw a problem attributable to oil.

The posh ones do.......allegedly;)

I think a sexy pair adds a bit of allure that is much preferred over the commando get up :)

ps - is this thread another wind up? It made me smile from the kick off.

pps - I actually had to buy baby oil last week for my every so dry skin - I kid you not - I was advised to apply freely. Semi synth?? :)

vines use castrol 10w50 full synthetic on my 2010 GS
