I’m travelling DFDS Newcastle to Rotterdam and Color Line Kiel to Oslo shortly.

Only ever having travelled across the channel before with Brittany Ferries I’m wondering how the above lines compare re loading and unloading, lashing your bike down, cabin comfort, restaurants, noise etc. over night crossings with both.

All info gratefully received.

TIA
Rich.

I’ve not used that particular crossing to Norway but I always take a couple of decent small ratchet straps with me plus some ear plugs.
Follow the instructions of the deck crew and either watch what other bike riders do, it there are any, or wait around for a friendly deck hand.
If in doubt, strap it yourself.

Have a great trip and remember to share some photos…please.

i wish you all the luck with that one ......   ...the DFDS ferry goes from Newcastle to Amsterdam not Rotterdam. In fact its Ijmuiden just north of Amsterdam on the coast. There is quite a bit of distance between the 2 cities in NL.
There are quite a few threads on this topic so have a search.
In a nutshell - Newcastle to Ijmuiden longest crossing and has tendency for stag do´s and booze cruise. A lot of pissed up Geordies having a day out in Amsterdam. Ferries are ancient and in my mind really crap for price. Lashing is done yourself.
Getting off in Ijmuiden can be a nightmare with traffic cameras and the roads are confusing to get to the main motorway.
I avoid this crossing like the plague.

If i go Oooop north then I tend to P&O to Hull which is better both sides to get to, cabins better and have recently been upgraded and the food on board is OK albeit expensive. Car deck is deck 7 if i recall and there is a specific bike lane on this one. Lashing to railings is easy BUT they do tend to jam the bikes in so beware of your panniers and then getting on and off.

Finally the one i use a lot simply because its closer to my work location is the crossing between Harwich and Hook of Holland.
A bitch to get to on both sides but the ferry is great. Shorter crossing, good cabins although food is not great.

happy to help on any more questions.

You’re right, I’m landing at Ijmuiden, just hoping that it doesn’t take an hour to exit the port 🤞

Just be aware of speed cameras. They wont hesitate to find you and bill you even it the UK
100 kmh in Rotterdam but nobody seems to stick to it ? Or i always find that.Doesn't it go up through the night.
62mph is a weird speed limit.

Ha! Good luck with that Doc. Holland is probably the worst country in Europe for speed cameras…
They are everywhere even on motorways and unlike France where they at least warn you before you get flashed or UK where you can spot the cameras a mile off here they are cleverly disguised or hidden
On motorways the limit is 100km/h cities 50 and main roads 80. Your call if you wish to ignore but as said they are quite happy to fine all tourists as well. There is no on the spot fines here like in Germany. Police radar checks same. They just send you the fine by post.
100km/h is new since 2022. It’s an attempt to meet emmisions targets by the government.
The longer you live here the more you get to know where the cameras are placed.
Is the limit strange? Not for us. For us having M/ph is strange and the 3 levels are totally logical

Ignore the limits if you wish, doesn’t affect me but just note the fines go up exponentially and if you hit 30km/h over they have the right to rescind your license and to get it back you have to pay a huge fine and in some cases retake your driving test. There are no points here

As example a pal of mine who’s job was like our pilot (wanker tanker flyer) friend Arsey but he drove trains. He had to go to work at 0400 on a Sunday morning and he was also a biker. Rode to work on an empty motorway between The Hague and Rotterdam. Was riding a bit fast at 160km/h but unbeknown road past an unmarked police car. Got stopped and the result was licenses taken away for 6 months and his fine was €980!

I generally set my cruise control and stick to the limit. Like you say the cars that are exceeding that must know the cameras.
I ain't been done yet so all good for now.

Depends on how switched on the Dutch immigration side is. Last year it did take about an hour as I was at the back of a few hundred other bikes. I only had 5 hours to go, some Polish people were off back home to Szczecin which is over 8 hours away, they were not seeing any Brexit benefits!
I follow the GPS out of the port and never had a problem there, though the daytime speed limit of 100kph on parts of their motorways can get a bit tedious. Dutch fuel prices last year were amongst the most expensive in Europe.

agreed. make sure you fill up back home first.
I always fill up at my local Costco (on average 7p - 10p cheaper compared to other suppliers) then top off as close as possible to the port. Most of these are circa 100 miles away for me. So that’s around 10L. Once of the boat, I don’t have to join a gang of fellow traveler at the first fuel station. I am brimmed for the next 240-250 miles. That was enough to get me out of Holland and into Germany last year without touching Dutch fuel. A few more reasons.
A. I get to use native currency without wasting euros and incurring one less exchange rate deficit.
B. Collect loyalty points on the credit card store cards.
C. I get off the boat/train and start my holiday without the faff.
