I'm planning a short 7 day trip in May around Norway and would like any advice on routes. I'm doing a project in Denmark so will get the Harwich - Esbjerg ferry across and do my work before setting off. I was looking to take a short cut and get the ferry from either Frederikshaven or Hirsthals over to S Norway, rather than drive through Sweden. Any experience of this ferry? What routes would you recommend if I have 5 days to see the Norwegian Fjords (and got to see the Preikestolen - it looks amazing).

Ref tying down bikes on the ferries - what's your recommendations? Is it worth bringing my own straps and some foam? Is sidestand better than mainstand (1150GS)???

Thanks for your help!

Color Line

Hi!

Color Line http://www.colorline.com/servlets/page?section=4000 has a ferry going from Hirtshals to Kristiansand.

I have been on that ferry once, in the summer. There was high waves, you should bring some straps, even if I think there will be strapa available on the ship.
I always use sidestand on ships. Have not tipped yet :)

I used the same one, but the other way. There's a "normal" ferry (that we caught) and a high speed one (like Speedferries I assume). It was pretty much like a cross-channel ferry really.

Thanks for the response. The prices look good on the ferry and pretty quick too - no need to get a cabin I assume?

Am planning to spend my time in SW Norway touring - I'll probably have 5 days max over there, what would you recommend as the 'must dos' and routes??

Where to go

There is not easy to give advice of where to go.
This site is far from complete, but some routes can be found:

If you go north from Kristiansand there is a lot of nice roads in Telemark. Along the fjords is nice, and between them there are mountains which also can be nice for motorcycling. Look for the best weather and turn your front wheel that direction.

Thanks Liv and Baard. With only 5 days I'll focus on the good roads and must-sees along the Fjords south of Bergen I think, together with climbing 'Pulpit Rock'.....

That is one crazy looking road.... Will probably need something stronger than is available when I get to the cafe on top....;)

Try to get down first... -Remember there is no reverse on your bike! :D
-And bring soap and a new pair of undies!:P

:) Liv.

Atlantic coast road

The road to Lysebotn is truly fantastic, but can still be closed early in May. Believe you can check it here: http://ny.suleskarvegen.no/index.php?m=nyhet&m_action=vis&type=12

If you take the ferry to Oslo you can go west to Telemark:

From Kristiansand to Stavanger, the Atlantic coast road is great.

Keep the coastline (take the "red" roads, keep away from E39). The roads are narrow, so you can't keep hi speed, but you will have great fun.

It's also some roads in-country from Kristiansand thats fun, but not so much "scenery". I have a track for Garmin, if it's someplace to post it...
