Few questions about ABS systems on the 1150

Yes, I'm a member of that silent majority. Erm. Was. But my servos still work and I'm still happy with them.

Therefore I would appreciate a catagoric answer........

Would a 2005 1150 GSA with punched steel ABS ring be fitted with the Servo assisted braking system and furthermore should this version be avoided in lieu of a non ABS variety?

Many thanks

Yes it will, no you shouldn't unless the prospect of having no ABS fills you with dread. If you have servo issues the simplest and cheapest way of solving them is to remove it altogether which also means goodbye to the ABS.

It takes about 12Kgs off the bike weight as compensation:eek:

The silent majority are happy with their servo ABS, I've had servo brakes since 2001 and no problems yet!

Not just servo.. I've had an 1100 since 1997 and only had one breakdown (hall sensor) The tales of woe I've read on this forum never cease to make my eyes pop. The list of spares deemed essential for a trip to europe: makes me laugh. And the oil threads are of course a constant source of hilarity.

Love it.

Don't forget all those that have servo brakes (which means linked brakes too),and ABS and are happy with the security it gives, lots of airing of possible failures and some who have had it fail, but lets not forget the majority with it that have had no problems. Its the failing of forums like this that highlight and over emphasise faults out of all proportion.

May I suggest that they are the owners yet to receive the £1200 bill for its replacement. And as yet haven't experienced NO brakes just as they're needed.
My mate had it happen on his brand new S, as far as he's concerned it nearly killed him. He handed it back and employed a solicitor to retrieve his money.

Servo ABS, had it on a new bike in 2004 hated it, despite no failure & sold bike within 5 months, for a new no ABS GSA

Then the stories of failure started to appear, I would never have any faith in that system

1. Yes

2. I wouldn't necessarily avoid buying an 1150 with servo ABS, they can be easily and cheaply converted to normal brakes. But I wouldn't pay extra for a bike with ABS.

Since I'm no longer silent. Yes, I haven't suffered servo failure (yet). If it happens, if I don't want to find lots of money for replacement, I have the instructions for no-cost removal (there's thread in the font of all wisdom).

Since "no brakes" are mentioned, I worried about that and rode to the top of the longest, steepest hill I could find hereabouts. Coasting down at 40mph or so with the ignition off, I'd say the residual braking without servos was about on par with my old 1970s brembo-braked Guzzi Convert. Way better than a 1970s Honda 550/4 in the rain. Not good, mind you. Much worse than I understand the result of servo removal to be.

I'll admit I prefer conserving momentum to last-moment hard braking.

RT(01)170000KM
RT(03)93000KM
GS-A(03)165000KM
The GS-A is my winterbike,(north-Norway) on snow and ice the ABS is very useful.

I have the instructions for no-cost removal (there's thread in the font of all wisdom).
Time wil show if/when I`l have to do that job.

servo/abs unit

I have a servo/abs unit that I removed from my 2004 R850R. that was in perfect working order when I removed it a couple of months ago.
If anybody wants it come and collect it. FREE.
or I will throw it in the bin after xmas.

That is very kind of you. these things are not cheap on ebay...

Unfortunately thats not a 'real' representation. 40mph :blast Try having it fail without warning, when you are expecting normal braking, thats when you will appreciate what is meant by no brakes.:thumb2

I'll take you up on that. How does tomorrow evening sound?

Much worse than I understand the result of servo removal to be.

My bike is now an ex-Servo ABS model. Post removal testing identified that the front brake alone is good enough for stoppies with a pair of Verns best boxes on the back with a bag of tools weighing a couple of kilo's. It is quite easy to lock the rear wheel but the brake does feel very progressive.

When I took off the servo kit I did invest in a full set of stainless hoses (replacing the solid pipe sections as well) but don't suppose that will make a huge difference unless the originals were knackered.

I am currently looking for a replacement for my ageing 2002 standard GS with 135k on the clock, and would like the next steed to be of the Adventure strain as the additional tank range would be useful.

I have looked at the eBay offerings and one did catch my eye.

Therefore I would appreciate a catagoric answer........

I have a 2005 1150 GSA with servo ABS 52K so far and I love it. I don't ride to the limit but in the wet the ABS has twice saved my no claims bonus:clap
When off road I turn it off and no problem. :beerjug:

I don't have a good answer for that. I don't plan to ride to the limit of the brakes (unless something unexpected happens). I used to ride bikes with brakes no better than BMW residual braking. If servo failure coincides with the need for an emergency stop I'll probably be sorry. I'll keep that possibility in the basket along with brake hose failure, sudden puncture, deer leaping from forest into my lap etc. as one more think that makes riding a motorcycle ill-advised.

Hi Mike P. it's all yours if you want it. I'm in tomorrow. where are you?
Colin, I'm in Plymouth but tomorrow I'll be visiting my old mum in Salisbury, I thought that I could divert via Frome on the back and relieve you of the clutter.

I'm setting-out early as I have to drop an elderly neighbour off to catch a flight (that's the second good deed in a year ).

Can you email me your address please?
