Fifth Gear

Lost 5th gear yesterday while ambling across Slovakia. Very careless of me. Put it down somewhere and just cannot find it

I'm now changing straight up/down through it. If I change into 5th (either direction) then it will take the gear (usually) but pops out the moment I bung the revs back on

Shan't stop me from finishing the trip (14,500 kms so far) but is real a pain in the backside. I've changed the gearbox oil today but could only get fully synthetic GL-4 75w90. That will do to flush any bits out and I'll keep my eye out for the proper oil and change it again as soon as I can.

And then the gearbox rebuild on my return (although it might be better to just get a recon box).

I'm still new to the whole BMW GS(A) thing hence I havent found 5th or 6th much yet. I blame riding sportsbikes for the last 8 years. Poor BMW seems to be revving around 6,500-7,000 rpm before I remember to change up.

I'm sure you will manage without 5th without much probs, just remember when downshifting for corners or similar, that could be messy!

Clucking bell, a recon gearbox is 675 quid!! Right, that means I'll have to have it apart.
