Filler Cap 4 Screws Problem -Well 1 Of Them.

FWIW Rodin, I really hate Torx, they are supposedly better for surface area and hence torque to undo, but they seem to “cam out” and chew up far too easily especially if at a slight angle, plus it’s easy to accidentally fit a slightly smaller tool into a bolt that the one it should be, causing damage eg T27 bit into a T30 bolt. If you start to chew up a Torx, stop immediately, go no further, reach straight for the dedicated “damaged torx” removal kit.

Completely agree on the risk of fitting the wrong size (usually the next size down). Bought a new fd drain plug because of exactly that . And yes, care is needed when inserting them... I'm kind of with your thinking!

As with all things, having some patience is key. In the case of my recent VW T5.1 EGR cooler job down behind the engine, all bolts are blind and done by feel. One sheared the head off, no dramas. Two came undone no problem. The hardest one to reach is slightly obscured by a pipe so the Torx bit attacks it at a slight angle, leading to cam out and chewing up. As soon as I felt it failing I stopped, then bought a set of 110mm long Torx bits. I managed to hammer in a T25 with some scrap steel as a hammer, then undid the bugger with a snap. I then replaced the T25 bolt with an A4 grade stainless hex headed bolt with coppaslip applied that will be accessible by socket or spanner, the next mechanic to work on it will thank me.

I'm sorry I can't remember, I bought them years ago. They are not cheap but if you do a lot of spannering they're worth every penny. Unlike the long pointy extractors you can hammer these in and they don't break. As I said in my earlier post they have never let me down and have been used thousands of times. I think Snap-on do some the same but again not cheap.
