Filler neck full of water

Went to fill up my 2001 1150GS the other day & found that the recess surrounding the filler neck was full of water. Is this normal or does a seal/gasket need replacing. If replacement required, is it an easy job & which is likley to be the culprit, gasket or o-ring ?

Theres a small hole in the filler surround... at the other end a pipe that sticks out beside your right foot peg. Pipe may have muck blocking it so use and air line or something to clear it.

My 1100 did the same had to put some release fluid down It for a few days to soften the solid packed dirt ,then i blew back up the pipe which comes out down behind the o/s footpeg and the blockage popped out the top .i

I had the same problem with my 2003 K1200GT - when filling the tank during heavy rain (and far from home) I saw a large dollop of water fall into the tank.

I ended up replacing the filler assembly as mine was rusted up - no problems since. For some reason the part is called a "Throttle Body" - it confused the hell out of me when ordering the part over the phone !

I phoned my local BMW Dealer to ask what I should do about the water in the tank and they reckoned the fuel injection system would just spit it through. I certainly haven't had any ill effects. It would be a different story with carbs.

Its the same filler arrangement on my 1150GSA and I keep an eye on the drain hole to ensure it stays clear.

Drain hole was indeed blocked, so blocked as to be invisible. Bunged fuel filler neck, cleaned out muck & blew through drain pipe to clear remaining detritus.

I now have black, oily lips, because in my haste I omitted to clean the pipe prior to blowing it.

I used some nylon filament from a lawn trimmer to clear it, with Q40 to wash it out.
