It’s a new one for me.. an 1150ADV came in with the rear wheel wobbling around, and I mean really wobbling around. First thought was final drive bearing collapsed, but no oil was leaking. Got hold of rear wheel and the whole final drive was moving from side to side dramatically. It was ridden in, I think another half mile and the final drive and rear wheel would’ve broken away from the swingarm Finally started work on it today. Had to cut around the L/H pivot pin as totally seized. Right one came off but the pivot was snapped off and still stuck in the final drive… lots of other seized nuts and bolts on other parts as I removed the necessary bits to get the swingarm off. Anyway, the cause of the problem was someone had fitted the alternative final drive pinion bushes instead of the usual bearings. They’d dried out, seized and broken off the pivot on the pivot bolts, oh, and the shaft was also fucked.. now waiting for all the many parts needed to reassemble the bike, but managed to save the final drive, much to the relief of the owners wallet:D. 94E7F4DC-BC36-469A-A915-422AC8647938.jpeg7F1C0A3C-85F4-4E82-B4A7-8A26638F3837.jpeg331D49C5-6757-4772-821D-52DD135C18A1.jpeg3E39E92C-3629-4C9B-B3B1-988B4E85878C.jpegB394D60E-DDC6-4991-B561-91E88945DFC6.jpeg

How could anyone with an ounce of common feckin sense ride something like that!!!’

That thing is a fucking shed !! The owner must be a brave man to ride it in that state.

I hope you are charging well Neil for the extra mile you will need to go to fix the thing.

Quite frankly that’s terrifying, you wouldn’t catch me riding that to you…it’d be on a trailer! Well done saving the final drive and as has been said hope you’re paid well for your time!

Are those nylager plastic bushes?
No they are not.

“Nylager” bushes are hollow and use the original pins. Those bushes are capped on the inside to retain the grease and use special pins with a hole so that they can be greased from the outside.

Most likely the owner was unaware that those bushes need regular greasing.

I recon they are these bushes.IMG_0590.jpeg

Those Nushing things ?
Never fitted them as I use the genuine bmw bearings (not cheap) on mine and usually last 30-40k and let you know with the usual squeak and/or play, when they are done for

But do you grease them?? :DD
The “Nushings” or “Nylager” or what ever they are called now are made from a plastic material called Nylatron

Nylatron® is a tradename for a family of nylon plastics, typically filled with molybdenum disulfide lubricant powder. It is used to cast plastic parts for machines, because of its mechanical properties and wear resistance.

I would this that is metal to metal seizing as metal to nylon wouldn't make a pivot bolt snap... I've fitted nushings without probs and have a set to replace the present genuine set on my GS... If they're correctly set up either genuine or nushings do well as far as I understand... I've tried an aftermarket set of genuine replica bearings and they were crap by comparison...

Here are what’s left of the final drive/swingarm bearings and pivot pins, which had both sheared off at the pivot pins where they fit into the bearings - a good one is shown in the picture as an example with a screwdriver touching the part that sheared off. 829C28FF-9983-436E-8DD8-A78DE42C0211.jpeg46A0B28B-4079-4F6B-B3F0-48E8980EBAE0.jpeg 93561FB3-CF02-417A-B061-67AFE68DF753.jpeg
