How deep does the final drive bearing seal (the big un) sit into the case?

I have a big trip coming up and followed Steptoes excellent sticky to have a peek at my FD bearing by removing the seal and checking it.
The new seal had been ordered, but on its arrival today I had forgot how deep the original sat. I put this down to my advancing years plus I couldnt wait to have a look and see how my bearing was er, bearing up :) , and yes I know, why didnt I wait until the replacement seal arrived before removing the original :doh

I spent a few hours trawling through all the previous threads on this, but could not find an answer. Any help would be great.

It looks to be flush with the housing cover or thereabouts. The BMW tool appears to be a plate of larger diameter than the seal which pushes it into the housing.

I fitted it flush after checking bearing - just tap it into place carefully with a hammer working your way gradually round (that's what I did anyway and seemed to work ...)
