Travelling back from my two week Scotland's trip final drive bearing failed the same way like last year when I was in Wales. I am currently at campsite in Warrington, Cheshire. Any ideas for transporting the bike to Hull for a ferry (to Belgium) or repairing somehow would be extremely appreciated.
My phone is 00 32 473 345 995
Thank you in advance,
Andris

it must be the day for final drives to go, mine went earlier, and ironically im supposed to be heading to Belgium in 2 weeks time.

hope you get sorted, good luck:thumb2

Does usually small bearing remains OK if large one fails?
I am starting to think of replaicing if I could get it :) without shimming, just for completing last 3000 miles :) I have a gas stove to heat up for removing outher ring, but I will have to look for a 7 mm hex key.

Generally it's just the big bearing that's gone in which case no need to re shim.
You'll need some decent levers to get it off.

Hi Andris,

If FD went again within just 1 year lifetime it was deffo shimmed wrong! With 90+% certainty. It just eats the bearing alive when it's preloaded (shimmed) off the spec.

I see you're getting a complete FD assy now instead of replacing+reshimming bearing? If so then it's better - much easier to replace. But if the new one blows up again within a short time/mileage period, then you know it's shimmed wrong.

Correctly shimmed new bearing should go well beyond 50 000+km on R11xx/850 bikes if you do correct oil changes. Mine has gone 100 000+km and that's two up full gear (bike is loaded to around 450kg most of the time!). I do oil change in gearbox & FD around every 10 000km too tho.

Take care, Margus

Will be with you by dinner time with spare drive unit and tools :thumb2

:thumb2 Don't forget we want to see the pictures - step by step including the post repair toast !!! :beerjug:

Asanore - we are almost neighbours - I'm in Sint Pieters Woluwe ;)

If anything heavier is required, I'm at work today with full workshop facilities (ox/accet, brg heaters, etc), though it's about 20 mile from Warrington on Deeside Industrial Estate, Flintshire, North Wales.
I'll come and look on this thread every 30 minutes, if you need help, send a PM and put your phone numbers on it.
I'll PM my workshop number to a few of the thread posters above....

Timpo,.

Sorry but I know f*** all about mechanics but, if it all goes pearshaped and you need a secure free storage area for a few days, then let me know.

Have warehouses at Widnes where you can safely store it, if the need arises.

Also have a bike covered trailer, but no vehicle with towbar and electrics sadly.

If I can help at all, give me a ring on 07836 749199.

All sorted

Got there by 12.50 riding round the camp site by 13:30 :thumb2
Nice to give him a hand he was on his own so no other bikes/mates to run round for him
