Update...
So....
Drained FD oil - very black and very metallic; drain plug also had a nice little stack on it. Only replaced it 3000 miles ago. All the lateral play was within the FD bearing assembly - although the bearings in situ look absolutely fine. And no oil leakage...?
Have removed the outer casing and removed the FD unit / bearing from the FD housing. The bevel bearing looks absolutely fine - no obvious wear or damage. By bevel bearing I'm referring to the cone shaped bearing on the flip side to the exposed FD bearing, which sits flush against the FD housing (forgive me - guessing on the terminology a little here) - these bearings / references seem to vary depending on which manual / forum / thread you read?? Is this the FD 'big' bearing folk refer to?
So now wondering how I change the FD bearing?? Looks like the casing is 'pressed' somehow, and Haynes manual has very little to say on the subject other than 'if you've got this far, consult a BMW dealer'.
So have identified local independent BMW mechanic... just wondering now whether there will be an issue re: the shimming and re-fit once the FD bearing has been replaced?? Don't want to dissemble more of the drive unit than I have to, so ideally would just like to travel with the removed FD bearing / casing / bevel assembly (somebody please put me out of my misery and give me the collective term for this little mechanical ensemble...) Anyone got any idea what this should cost BTW...?
Having got this far, is there anything else I should be looking to check / replace / service whilst I've got my fingers in the Swarfega jar...
Oh... and I didn't run the engine in gear once whilst on the centre stand, tempted as I was...
