the skf seal is 12mm thick and the oem one is 10; i'll go for the bmw10 mm seal.
only asked because i thought mounting the 12mm one would fit in there;
but as i appreciate your and steptoe's technical skills, i will go for the 10mm one, since it is vital for my safety and the bike's
Yep - I know the BMW seal is 10mm deep but what I don't know is if the seal lip being in a different position will be a problem.
Likewise, I think the seal housing in the FD casing is 'bottomless' (i.e. there's no lip against which the seal sits)? This being the case, is there enough clearance between the back of the seal and the bearing to accommodate the extra 2mm (the outside face of the seal will need to sit flush with the FD casing)? If you can answer these questions, it may be worth trying the SKF part.
